According to the study, we have collected the statistical data for the frequency of common diseases in the materials of the ancient pagodas. The analysis of the diseases is based on the study of materials science, geological structure, physics, chemistry, biology and human activities.Refering four-years’ experience of monitoring, a set of technology and a serie of devices which are effective for the monitoring can be enumerated. A monitoring project on four acient pagodas in Zhejiang was carried out using these devices and technology. In the monitoring work od Baochu Pagoda, a discovery of the loose bricks and the falling mortar was given to make the suggestion for mending without delay. For Double Jingchuang, we monitored surface weathering and water migration activities. We got the conclusions of weathering and microbial contamination. We also believe that large energy absorption accelerated weathering. We monitored Yanqingsi Pagoda mortar strength and found out that the tilt of the tower had something to do with the mortar strength. After using new materials to repair Longdesi Pagoda, we examined the effect of the repairing. In this work, mortar samples selected from 5 ancient stone pagodas in Zhejiang Province, China were analyzed. The results showed that mud, lime-soil mortar, lime-sand mortar and lime-gypsum mortar were used as binders in these pagodas. The ratio of Ca(OH)2/aggregate ranging from about 0.3 to 2.7 was usually used to make lime mortar. Protein and polysaccharide were also found in some samples. The monitoring work with portable devices and the method conbined with art and science, has its objectivity. It provides basis for the study in weathering, choosing the proper material for the repairing and checking the efeects of the repairing.
