Painted pottery is the symbol of Northwest China prehistory. Painted-Pottery has experienced a total of 4000 thousand years from its rise to the fall, spreading to the west continuously. Although painted-pottery and its distribution to the West has gradually been the consensus of scholars, its definition、stages、dating and origin has been their bifurcation. If these problems are completely solved, the westernization of painted pottery will be clearer, the development of the prehistory of northwest China will be more explicit, the evolution model of Chinese prehistory will be more comprehensive. Therefore, this paper analyzes the basic connotation of branches of painted-pottery culture, elucidates the development context of painted-pottery culture, and investigates the process of painted-pottery culture spreading west from the perspective of Northwestern Chinese painted-pottery.Chapter one defines the scope of time and space, illuminates the research subject, reviews study history, proposes exploratory task.Chapter two to chapter five focuses on painted pottery as the angle of view, dividing into four different periods:Yangshao Period, Majiayao Period, Xia dynasty Period and Shang dynasty to Han dynasty. By observing nineteen branches of painted-pottery in chronical sequence:BanPo Culture, MiaoDiGou Culture, ShiLingXia Type, MaJiaYao Culture, Quanternary period of DaDiWan Culture, BanShan Culture, MaChang Culture, XiChengYi Culture, SiBa Culture, TianShanBeiLu Culture, Shajing Culture, ShanJiaTou Culture, TangWang Type, XinDian Culture, NanWan Culture, YanBuLaKe Culture, SuBeixi Culture, ChaWuHuGouKou Culture and SuoDunBuLaKe Culture, analyzing cultural connotation, sorting out development stage, determining the dating of Northwestern Chinese prehistory cultures.Chapter six organizes three non-painted pottery cultures with painted-pottery:the sixth stage of ShiZhaoCun Culture, Qijia Cultaqure and KaYue Culture, confirming their cultura] attributes, summarizing unearthed pottery and clarifying the origin of these painted-pottery.Chapter seven improves temporal and spatial framework of painted pottery culture in Northwest China based on the nineteen painted-pottery cultures and their chronological study. On this basis, examining the origin and the flow of painted pottery culture in Northwest China by classifying them into three system:Oriental system, Western system and SinKiang system, which Oriental system is formed by MiaoDiGou subsystem, MaJiaYao subsystem, XinDian subsystem and XiBa subsystem.Chapter eight explains the evolution pattern of pottery culture in Northwest China.Chapter nine concludes research results, points out the shortcomings and outlooks future goal.
