Cohesion is an important problem in translation and teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. The past researches prove that the acquisition of cohesion is an intractable problem. Especially in the parallel English and Chinese text, a cohesive word probably corresponds to several cohesive words in target language. Most current study on cohesion between English and Chinese made the systematic study on the differences of cohesive devices on the clause level, whereas the study on cohesion on the textual level is less. The dissertation is supposed to make a detailed interpretation on the commonalities and features of cohesion in English and Chinese text with corpus. Our study is dedicated to generalize and explain rules and mechanism (producing) of cohesive expressions in a degree. In details, a study and analysis that how cohesive devices link up with other factors and form coherent text in practical linguistic circumstance would be made, on the basis of study of the connection between the cohesive form and cohesive meaning. Through a profound comparison between the cohesive expression in English and Chinese, not only could the dissertation contribute to category of cohesion and Chinese and English linguistics, but also improve accuracy of translation appliances as well as the language teaching practice.This dissertation has seven chapters:Chapter one begins with the research introduction, dissertation reasons, research methodologies and the frame of our study.Chapter two is literature review. Three core concepts are summarized and analyzed in this part, which are text, cohesion and the study on cohesion in English and Chinese. And the analysis on previous studies embody the relationship between text, cohesion and the comparative study on cohesion, and the related study in text level is limited. Generally speaking, more analysis is in introspective, macro and qualitative perspective, less in the objective, systematic and quantitative perspective. It is because the investigation on cohesion in text level depends on the complicated context, including linguistic context and social context. Therefore, it is crucial to construct available and valid framework and mythologies for promotion of cohesion researches. They are the research track of the third and fourth chapter.Chapter three is to construct the theoretical framework of interaction. On the one hand, the theoretical framework is based on the linguistic philosophy to discuss natural intersubjectivity of translation as linguistic transformation. On the other hand, the framework is to connect and deduce the research findings in translation, functional linguistics and pragmatics, thus provide that generative process of cohesion consist of two parts:choosing suitable cohesion depends on insights of author(translator), competence of intersubjectivity participation, capabilities of creation in use of cohesion etc; the horizon of interaction is common generarive basis of cohesion in any language. The concept of interaction is axis of the dissertation. All the studies reveal that cohesion is not the simple grammatical. Cohesion is the carrier of meaning with multiple functions.Chapter four mainly introduces procedures of corpus construction, which includes data introduction, corpus design and interaction research and frequency calculation through the process of self-built FT corpus. Study on translated Chinese text presents that translors omit some cohesive devices and insert deixis, pron and conj. The study regard the results are evidence of related language phenomen. One is frequencies changes in parallel English and Chinese text reflects the preference and tendency of cohesion in the same textual textual context. And the other is frequencies changes in parallel English and Chinese text are related to the choosing of translators as only cross-cultual expert connecting English and Chinese language system,Chapter five is data analysis based on parallel corpus and reference corpus. The professional linguistic software Paraconc is to investigate cohesive devices including deixis, personal pronoun, conjunction as well as concordance. Results are the frequencies of deixis in translated Chinese text over English corpus and reference Chinese corpus; frequencies of first person and second person is almost same as English corpus, however compared with the reference Chinese corpus pretty high; three kinds of conjunction representing additive, temporal and additive which frequencies are different from the conjunctions representing causal, adversative and hypothetical.Chapter six extends specific context analysis and case analysis based on the results of quantity analysis. The study focuses on mismatching of cohesive device between English and Chinese text. The study is supposed to break limits of concerning cohesive correspondence on linguistic form between English and Chinese and attempts to analyse inner imperative.Chapter seven is conclusion. The main arguments, innovation and topics are summarized in this chapter.Firstly, study on language interaction begins in oral text, since the interaction between speaker and receiver is natual. The dissertation studies interaction in written text. Linguistic philosophy deduction on translation transformation and researches on linguistics provide that generative process of cohesion consist of two parts:choosing suitable cohesion depends on insights of author(translator), competence of intersubjectivity participation, capabilities of creation in use of cohesion etc; the horizon of interaction is common generarive basis of cohesion in any language.Secondly, the analysis on corpus proves that English is hypotaxis-prominent, while Chinese, parataxis-prominent. The findings in the corpus presents translors are active to insert cohesice devices, which explains that translor do have competence of intersubjectivity participation to influence text input.Thirdly, with the help of corpus, the dissertation break limits of concerning cohesive correspondence on linguistic form between English and Chinese and attempts to analyse inner imperative of mismatching cohesion in parallel texts.Fourthly, interaction studies in Chinses text are not popular as English text. Our studies investigate three kind of cohesive device such as deixis, pron and conj deeply. The analysis and explanation on three cohesive devices present that they cooperate with each other in the text and presents consistent interaction tendency.
