After a history of more than 100 years, the poster visual art has developed and became a culture, which are shown in 3 different forms of “Medium”, “Literature” and “Art”.And poster visual art studies should be focused on the cross-examination of its 3different forms and their interactions, enable to read and interpret a design from different perspectives, such as the social and historical backgrounds and values, connotation or intentions of a particular image/design. So our study of poster art culture can become more open, dynamic and with more academic topics and values. This article is a detailed comparative study of modern poster art from 1990 s to today from both Chinese and German designers with a focus on analysis of different design philosophies, cultural differences and ideologies. There will be four parts in this study.Firstly it will be focused on the definition and fundamentals of poster arts, as well as the angles and methods this study will be using, backed by various resources and references from previous research and interviews. Secondly it will compare the similarities of modern Chinese and German poster designs in today’s global market.Thirdly, it will analyse the differences of Chinese and German poster art culture by comparing the history of each countries design industry. Lastly, it will have a detailed analysis of the features and characteristics of both countries’ poster cultural development from 5 different perspectives: visual art thinking; semantics and aesthetics; traditional culture of two countries, visual arts design language in script writing, as well as difference in recognition and interpretation in social and public levels. With no doubt the modern information age has provided the foundation and atmosphere for poster designers from both countries to share a very similar or same design philosophy, which can be seen from similar design languages, the visual cultural ideology, as well as the similar directions of creative thinking in a lot of instances. However, there are still significant differences between two countriesbecause of cultural differences. Therefore, our current and future studies on poster visual art have to be based on mutual respect and understanding of both similarity and differences of two cultures, to seek a common design language that is constructive and value to both countries’ poster art industry, which will be a vital part for us to form an unique “Chinese style” design language.
