National problems vary in different historical periods. In modern times, due to the invasion of Western imperialism, China’s national issues have become increasingly prominent and national crisis worsening. Therefore, the studies of nationality have historical and practical significance. In this thesis, we studied how the Communist Party of China (CPC) explored the Marx theory of nationalism around the year1938. Through research and analysis of relevant literature, archives, theoretical works, leadership speeches and other materials, in the form of monographic study and based on a dialectical view of history, we summarized the basic components and major breakthroughs of the national theory of the Communist Party of China during that specific historical period. We pointed out that the sixth plenary meeting of the sixth Central Committee of the Communist Party of China was a turning point and milestone in China’s history of nationality. It marks the maturity of the national theory of CPC. It is a guideline for and has significant impact on the establishment and consolidation of the Anti-Japanese National United Front, as well as the victory of the new democratic revolution and the construction of a socialist country. The thesis is divided into six chapters.Chapter1, Introduction. It is discussed in this chapter the origin of the topic, the object of research and its significance, current research status, material overview, research and writing technique, and possible innovations.Chapter2, The Concept of Nation. The concept of nation (as defined) is a basic category of national problems. The scientific definition of the concept of nation is the starting point of the studies of nationality. This chapter focuses on the understanding and illustration of the concept of nation by enlightenment thinkers of late Qing and the Republic of China, by authoritative Marxism writers, as well as by the Communist Party of China. It is argued that the concept of nation has been developing and evolving, and the understanding of it by CPC is a breakthrough.Chapter3, National Relations. As the Japanese imperialists launched the war of aggression against China, the survival crisis of Chinese nations unprecedentedly intensified. Japan’s differentiating strategy did great damage to the unity of Chinese nations. Seeing how matters stand, the Communist Party of China established anti-Japanese base areas in northwest and north China. Based on the principle of equality among all nationalities in the country, they dealt with the relationship between Han and minority nationalities like Mongolian and Hui in a flexible and effective manner, which greatly helped the consolidation and development of the regime of anti-Japanese base areas.Chapter4, National Liberation and Chinese Revolution. Starting from the inevitability and essential characteristics of the Chinese revolution, this chapter discusses that the national liberation movement in China not only led to the liberation of the nations, but also is an integral part of the Chinese revolution. After the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, the Communist Party of China deemed that the domestic class contradictions had transformed into a conflict between the Chinese nations and the Japanese imperialists. CPC therefore established the Anti-Japanese National United Front which later became an important facility for national liberation. Chapter5, National Rights. National rights theory is an integral part of the national theory of CPC and is an important basis for the development of national policies. This chapter discusses how the Communist Party of China theoretically and practically explored the national rights problems during different historical periods including the founding years (during the Great Revolution), the Agrarian Revolution and the Sino-Japanese War. It is specifically explained in this chapter the rights of peoples to self determination, which provides a theoretical basis for the presentation of regional national autonomy.Chapter6, The Evolution from "the rights of peoples to self determination" to "regional national autonomy". This chapter is the focal point of the thesis. Held in1938, the sixth plenary meeting of the sixth Central Committee of the Communist Party of China is an event of great significance in the perspectives of historical transformation. It made a breakthrough of the national theory of CPC in presenting the evolution from "the rights of peoples to self determination" to "regional national autonomy". The breakthrough not only fed the need of the Sino-Japanese War, but marked the maturity and deep-going of CPC’s exploration of the Marx theory of nationalism.
