This dissertation focuses on a new kind of learning pattern in the new media environment which is as called micro-learning. Firstly, it defines the concept of new media and describes the learning revolution under that environment. New media environment stimulates the production of micro-contents and supports the rising of informal learning.Micro-learning is one form of informal learning and there’s a profound background beneath its rising. It analyses the memes of micro-learning in the Chinese traditional culture, the reflecting of modern pop culture and the micro-culture phenomena under the new media enviroment. This section also builds a four level framework to observe the new media environment, which is media devices, media content, media application, media technology. Then it analyses the characteristics of these four levels and concludes that it’s all changing directing something seems micro.The third chapter discusses the design of micro-learning. It firstly describes learners’five kinds of attentions and four levels of focuses under the situation of attention lacking and information overloading. Then, it analyses the cognitive basis based on the connectivism theory and the emergent learning approach. This chapter also depicts some related issues about learner experience design and several related principals of micro-learning activity design.The fourth chapter focuses on the resources issues of micro-learning, it mentions four facets of resources development, which is resource exist and supply, tagging and folksonomy, extraction and customization, aggregation and mash-up.The fifth chapter is about practice exploration of Micro-learning. It mentions two micro-learning projects. The first case is the design of Yangzhou Museum website. It elaborates how the micro-learning concepts are build-in that project so as to support the visitor and learners to study the Chinese traditional culture informally. The second case is the development of Yangzhou Culture Relics mobile application, which could be used in mobile micro-learning of culture knowledges.
