Research On Optimizing Political Qualities Of University Students In Contemporary China

Within the schema of university student qualities, political qualities are taking the dominating roles. They are not solely having roles in directing and motivating student integrated development, but also are connected with consolidating and developing the Communist Party and even socialist institutions in China. Furthermore, they are associated with the rise or decline of the whole Chinese people. Hence, optimizing political qualities of university students is an extremely significant and strategic task in the construction of socialist political civilization. It is also a momentously historical mission.This dissertation initiates from a structural analysis of political qualities as a logical starting point for their optimization. It then follows deep analyses of correlations between different dimensions and elements from the perspectives of content and process respectively. From a static point of view, the substantial structure of political qualities of university students has the socialist core values as its essential part and it mainly consists of four subsystems:political psychology, political ideology, political morality, and political practice. These four subsystems are interpenetrated and interacted. From the dynamic point of view, the forming process of political qualities of university students is comprised of five segments: political perception, political emotion, political volition, political belief, and political behavior. They are in a flow of ever changing and transforming in an upward spiral.The formulating and developing process of political qualities of university students is derived from the interactions and aggregation between individuals and societal environment. In such a process, subjective and objective factors are interplayed and balanced with each other. The factors that have impacts on political qualities are composed of political, economic, and cultural environments at the macro levels, family atmosphere, school education, and mass media at the meso levels, and peer group and personal characters at the micro levels. The factors at the three levels are interpenetrated and interrelated so as to extend influences on the formation and development of political qualities of university students.Based on empirical studies, it is observed that current political qualities of university students are presenting as being positive, promising, and stable, although a couple of problems are still existing:political believes are tending to be mature in which steadiness is mixed with confusion, political standpoints are distinctive in which hope is lived with perplexity, political enthusiasms are growing in which care is tolerated by apathy, and eventually political evaluations are scattered in which identification is intervened with crisis. Generally speaking, political qualities of university students are presented with the following characteristics:unification of political values, diversity of approaches to political participation, efficiency of political evaluation, and rational expression of political behaviors. On the other hand, the developmental tendencies of political qualities of university students could be described as:interactions with dominating values are becoming outstanding, reconciliations with demands from political ecology are enhanced, monotonousness of political qualities tends to be substituted by complexness, and choices of political behaviors are altered from radical and biased to deliberated and practical.To build up the optimizing system of political qualities of university students has to be concentrated on socialist core values, consider adapting to current citizenship that fulfills the requirements from socialist political civilization as fundamental direction. Such an enterprise could not be accomplished without the following premises:cultivating subject consciousness of "political man" as inherently driving force, practical functions of political and ideological education as underlying approaches, construction of socialist culture as beneficial infrastructure, favorable political ecology as reliable guarantee, broadening pathways to political participation as an effective measure, and finally but not least learning successful experiences from abroad as an essential complement.
