Founded on the developmental strategy theories, the dissertation aims to analyzethe main issues arising from the professionalization process of competitive basketballteam and games and their corresponding influential factors under the title of “TheProfessional Development Strategies for Basketball for Competitive Purposes in China”,by using the methods of literature review, comparative studies, surveys and case studies,mathematical probability theories means with clarification of relevant conceptsincluding concepts of basketball for competitive purposes, professional basketball,professional development of basketball and developmental strategies. Based on this, theprofessional development strategies for basketball for competitive purposes in Chinaand the corresponding principles are highlighted so as to offer a systematic frameworkfor presenting the developmental strategies and subsequent measures. The mainresearch findings are listed as follows:It is believed that professional basketball and professional development ofbasketball are totally different concepts. Professional basketball refers to a status;technically speaking it means basketball for professional purposes. However, theprofessional development of basketball means the developmental process of basketballsports. In the study, the researcher focuses on the dynamic transition of competitivebasketball from the specialty to the professionalized mode. The professionalizeddevelopment strategies of competitive basketball are the long-term, target-oriented andholistic plans which are designed to fulfill the professionalization. From the perspectiveof operation, it means the managerial process of building feasible adaptability bycombining the factors such as strategic targets, resources allocation and status quo.The conflicts and gaming between the administrative guidance and the marketbehaviors as well as the over-imitation of the foreign professional basketball teammanagement and overreliance on the government’s role in resources allocation are some of the most serious problems arising during the professional management of basketballteams and games in China. To put it more specifically, in the basketball game system,the main issues lie in the lack of long-term planning in the openness or closeness ofcompetition, the non-smooth transition between game seasons, the disconnectionbetween different layers of competition, the fairly small scale and dull mode of games,the economic burden arising from the aggressive competition and the conflicts betweentraining and games, the instability of gaming methods. Meanwhile, there is seriousinsufficiency in the training system. In the training circle, there are prominent issuesincluding divergence and inconsistency of training targets, the disjointing phenomena intraining intensity and training service provision and the lack of awareness in design ofprofessional basketball training methods.The government’s behaviors, economic foundation, sports system, policies, lawsand regulations, the traditional culture and physical level are the major factors thatinfluence the professional development of competitive basketball.Continuity, innovation, sustainable development and the innovation in the nationalsystem for basketball games, brand construction and development with correspondingpriorities are the fundamental principles for us to formulate the professionaldevelopment strategies for basketball for competitive purposes in China.The systematic structure for professional development strategies for basketball forcompetitive purposes in China contains three parts, namely the subject factors, theobject factors and the agency system. The subjects are divided into those for decisionmaking, operation and talents. The objects are divided into the league matches andmarket and the agency system including the overall institution, the mass media and theagency activities.The guidelines for the professional development strategies for basketball forcompetitive purposes in China can be summarized into complying with the internationaltrend, the characteristics of developing countries, developing the professional properties,enhancing the game level, exploring the developmental potential, perfecting theinstitutional innovation, adhering to stable development and attaching importance to theinfrastructure construction. The strategic guidance should be summarized as in compliance with the international trade, developing the Chinese characteristics,developing the professional traits, improving physical activity levels, exploring thedevelopmental forces, consummating the institutional innovation, adhering to the stabledevelopment, stressing the infrastructure construction. The strategic periods include fiveparts, i.e. preparation (1990-1995), exploration (1995-2000), development (2005-2015),improvement (2015-2025) and consummation (2025-). The strategic goals include theshort-term targets(2005-2015),mid-term targets (2015-2025)and long-termtargets(2025-).The short-term targets can be summarized into adhering to the centeredsubject, establishing the operational mechanism, improving the club’s operationalabilities, and building up the brand advantage. The mid-term targets can besummarized into lowering the subject’s function, developing the club operation,consummating the match patterns and creating the brand features. The long-term targetscan be summarized into the leading position of the association, the autonomousoperation of the clubs, the reasonable patterns of matches, and creating the brand series.The strategic focuses can be placed on the clear identification of the functions of thegovernment and the enterprises, improving the basketball skills, the organizationalinnovation of the association, and building up the Chinese characteristics of thebasketball match. The strategic paths are displayed in the shock therapy of theinstitution and the association, the change of management subject’s function, the talentconstruction, the training methods cultivation, the media function development and theprogressive development of the agencies.The strategic countermeasures for the professionalization of the competitivebasketball in China can be summed up like this: change the government functions fromthe decision maker to the guide so that the new decision maker with the association asthe core can be formed. Consummate the legislation mechanism and consummate thelaw enforcement structure. Enhance the institutional innovation and closure the controlpaths. Make scientific planning for the market operation of the professional basketballand integrate the professional basketball resources while improving the industrial scaleof the professional basketball. Consummate the talent structure and quality constructionof the professional basketball industry in China, create the talent pipelines and modes for innovation. Adhere to the talent cultivation concepts backed up with the scientificdevelopment outlook. Improve the target driving force of the matches to pull up thebasketball skills and develop the competitive mode of the progressive mode of leaguematches. Enhance the substantialization of the clubs and establish thede-administration-orientation of the clubs. Improve the productivity of clubs andconduct overall planning for the club’s scale and regional pattern.
