Daily Logic Of Farmer "for Profits": Procedural Narrative Of Rural Land Disputes

Taking three villages as an example, which are in the city of S located Southeastof Shanxi Province, the rural disputes of land using as the research background,displaying and rendering farmer’ logic of “for profit”. Through our research, theevents of rural land disputes are increasing in recent years, have a great impact on thenormal order of rural society, why so many land disputes? By the field study, theauthor found that the event involved stakeholders include stste, local government,private businessmen, rural cadres and farmer in land using’ process, their interests areintertwined. One of the most important of the stakeholders is farmer, farmer is thenetwork’s center interweaved by each stakeholders. Investigate the root of Landdisputes, in addition to the vague of ownership in the category of the state system,farmers’ understanding about land using’ rules or ordinary logic. With these questions,this paper studied the land disputes of three villages by the narrative technique,reproducing the rural land disputes in the form of a story. From the five paths, whichare the consciousness opposition between state and society, identified by system orpractice, trading rules based on the contract or human sympathy, forging elite by therelationship or competition,“grey society” between the order and rules, carried on athorough analysis on the rural land using’ disputes respectively.On the basis of narrative research on three villages’ land disputes, we examinefarmers’ daily logic in the process of land using’ disputes, found a huge gap betweenthe world of farmers’ consciousness and national policy specification,in other words,the fracture of consciousness between government and farmers in the problem of landusing’disputes. Land using’understanding way show the inconsistent. These waysdifferences of understanding reflected in:（1）From country’s angle, the rural land belong to the collective;From farmer’s angle, the rural land belong to their own,because of their using all the time.（2）To determine the identity of the villagers needhousehold register， from the state system; The judgment standard of the farmers isdaily life in the village, that is practice, from farmers’ understanding.（3）In the landtransactions, the state’s law just protects the formal contract, usually the form of landtransactions rely on the trust from acquaintance，in other words, half contract formmixed with human sympathy，once appear, land disputes are hard to say.Causes of land disputes in addition to the differences of understanding formbetween state and farmers, social forces in the village had a major impact on landdisputes in recent years. Firstly, according to the relationship’s path, the ruralcommunity is in the process of forging elite, forming the relationship pattern like thesame root system of potato finally, the circle is clearly and interrelate each other. andbecome an important force of farmers " for profits" in the process of land disputes;Secondly, rural "grey social" continually disturbed the rural social inherent order, thisforce is constantly seeping into the battle of the land’s interests, farmers yield andadaptation to "grey social" for interests in land.Further excavation on the deeply causes of land disputes, we found that fractureof the consciousness between state and farmers is actually caused by the huge gapbetween text and practice. The state’s rules of text is not necessarily the rural practicerules, it need running for long time from text to practice. In the process of rural landusing’ disputes, if you want to know the gap between text and practice, not only weneed to know the relevant regulations of the state, we also need to know the farmers“for profit” daily logic in the process of land disputes, farmers’ daily logic showed therich connotation, presented a fragmented state in the practical field of rural society,The main practical form:(1) Daily occupy, farmers think he has used land for longtime, the land using’habit has become one part of daily life, can’t be broken;(2) Laborresults, land is the achievements of their hard working, hold the land’s interestsbelongs to their own because of their diligence;(3) Historical reduction, farmersdefend the interests of land by his memory for the land’s using;(4) The existential, inthe process of land disputes, farmers defend their interests by the right of existence. Farmers have serious peasant thinking, however play an important role duringfarmers’ real daily life, it is the leading thinking in rural society daily.
