Affected by western education theory and knowledge system, the development of Chinese modern education is facing many problems. Western school system has been accepted in our education, but we are still in the perplexity of education theory because we couldn’t find a way to combine western educational theory to Chinese educational reality. It is a focused subject to explore how to develop a suitable education to meet the need of people and society for all researches of times. The rich and profound educational thoughts are rooted in Chinese education tradition among which the education of Huayan school of Buddhism is characterized for its completion. Huayan’s educational thoughts aim at teaching people how to realize a complete outlook of life with its characteristic of profundity, vitality and inspiration, in favor of exploring the suitable education way.The paper firstly analyzes philosophy works, biographies, sutras and sastra to affirm the system of Huayan completion philosophy through document analysis. Next, employing analytical method, it studies Huayan education practice from the perspective of Huayan philosophy to summarize the thoughts and opinions related to life education. Finally, the theoretical structure and contents of Huayan education are generalized through induction method, basing on Huayan completion philosophy.The nature of Huayan’s completion thoughts is life education which constructs a sound educational system including education aims, purposes, teaching principles and practice methods to enlighten people to complete their life systematically and rationally, considering the essential issues of human nature, consciousness and well-being in educational field. The paper consists of six chapters which discuss the origin, conation and denotation logically and progressively one by one. The first chapter clarifies and defines the educational nature and the fundamental educational structure of Buddhism to premise Huyan’s educational thoughts. Chapter two explores the philosophical fundamental of Huayan’s educational thoughts through investigating and analyzing the thoughts of human nature, consciousness and well-being in Huayan philosophy. Both chapter three and four explain the specific contents of Huayan’s educational thoughts in detail. Chapter three proposes five teaching principles which are digesting knowledge comprehensively, interfusing the three vehicles into the single vehicle, explaining all natures directly, sudden enlightenment and gradual practice, phenomena symbolization of truth in terms of the thoughts of five teaching classifications. Chapter four presents the practical model of Sudhana in Avatamsaka Sutra and moral models of five eminent masters of Huayan Sect.The study of Huayan’s educational thoughts is valuable and meaningful for developing Chinese education. Firstly, it is projecting Huayan philosophy into education field widens the scope of Huayan study and develops a new vision to investigate education. Secondly, the study looks back upon the traditional educational thoughts so that to grasp the theoretical foundation of educational philosophy. And then, in the view of philosophy, Huayan’s completion education with its systematical theory can provide instructions for life education at present. At last, it is tentative and practical to study the feature of the process of Huayan learning which provides references for actual education activities.
