Football is mankind’s common language, the diversity of which can reflect the diversity of human culture. Europe, as the most developed football region in the world(followed by South America), is famous for the longest history of modern football coverage and developed media market. Chinese football coverage has its own characteristics as well. International football coverage, while developing the characteristics and accumulating experience of its own, has given rise to some questions worthy of further study and research. For example, whether the cultural diversity reflected in football coverage has gone beyond the overall transmission level of Olympic culture? What influence will National ideology exert on football coverage? What challenges will new media environment and transmission technologies bring to football coverage? What’s the relationship between the transmission strategies of sports organizations such as FIFA and football coverage? How does the international football coverage copyright market impact football coverage? Based on these questions, this paper seeks to study international football coverage from six aspects and tries to find the reasons and work out solutions for corresponding questions, thus providing reference for the development of Chinese football coverage.Chapter I of this paper is the introduction. It consists of the background, purpose and significance of this study and literature review based on the study of football coverage, transmission of sports projects, comparative news transmission and cross-culture communication at home and abroad, which lays a foundation for this paper. Chapter II is the ontology. It explores the inherent laws of football coverage and delves into the international trends of football coverage, the specialized requirements under the background of cross-cultural communication and minority area of dissemination, and the detailed presentations of live coverage. Chapter III is the business theory. It probes into the development status quo and problems facing football coverage business at the current stage. Taking 2014 Brazilian World Cup coverage as an example, it summarized the characteristics and styles of football coverage in Brazil, the United States, Britain, Germany and Japan, analyzes the features of Chinese World Cup coverage, and studies the interactive transmission of World Cup coverage. Chapter IV is the idealism. It explores the influence of national ideology on football coverage and studies the typical roles of football coverage under the backdrop of national “maintaining the order” concept and studies the influence of nationalism and media hegemony on football coverage, based on analyzing the relationship between football games and politics. Chapter V is the organization theory. It studies the influence of transmission strategies used by sports organizations such as FIFA on football coverage, analyzes what influence institutions such as FIFA exerts on football coverage through taking the lead in transmission, improving requirements for specialized coverage, protecting the interests of advertising sponsors, actively promoting values of their own, etc. Chapter VI is the copyright theory. It discusses the role of international football coverage copyright environment in football coverage. Besides, by focusing on television broadcast, this chapter studies the status quo of football coverage copyright, characteristics of international copyright market and its role in football coverage based on clarifying the nature of football coverage copyright. Chapter VII is the localization theory. It centers on unique problems such as typical Chinese football coverage and regional conflicts based on the summary of the stylistic evolvement of Chinese football coverage, and explores how Chinese football coverage, against the backdrop of the development of international football coverage, could achieve its development in the insistence through basing itself on local culture and insisting in reform and development.Through the above study, this paper maintains that under the backdrop of the specialized construction of international football organizations, football coverage has presented regular features such as cross-cultural agreement on transmission concepts, nationwide transmission scope, and segmented maintenance of coverage copyright, increase in transmission quality, and de-massed trend of transmission technology. Those responsible for Chinese football coverage should grasp the laws of football coverage on the basis of the loyalty to national culture, and endeavor to improve the methods and content of football coverage based on an extensive study of advanced culture and coverage practice experience from other countries.
