With the fast development of global economy and fierce competition ofenterprises, organizations face the increasing environmental uncertainty factors.It is quite dangerous to fully rely on intuition to improve strategic decision-making speed. How to deal with an uncertain environment? Why plans alwaysseem underestimated? If the environment is uncertain, and people cannot predictthe future with the analysis tools, how should we do? How to reduce risk oftraditional practice? How organizations acquire competitive advantage throughrapid response to external organizational environment and to be the focus ofpractitioners and organization theory researchers.Improvisation is one of the emerging research themes in organization.Organization researchers have found that Improvisation was widely discussed inthe field of industrial development, organizational learning, fast-pacedenvironment, organizational innovations and innovative problem–solving, etc.However, due to lack of in-depth understanding of the essential characteristics,predisposing conditions, happening situations of organizational improvisation,the theory system of organizational improvisation has not fully established.Previous researches were concerned about the application style, but in thisresearch, case studies focus on inducing process of improvisation behavior tostudy the fundamental behavioral characteristics.This research will start with exploring organizational improvisation researchin China and abroad, reviewing the organizational improvisation literature, anddividing organizational improvisation into two generations, classifying theevolution of the conception of organizational improvisation studies in threestages, then will review organizational improvisation studies from differentperspectives (jazz Metaphor perspective, organizational learning perspective,team management perspective, strategic perspective), summarize the previousscholars research results, define the concept of organizational improvisation anda comparative analysis with other related concepts, according to the previousresearch description of the types of organizational improvisation and organizational improvisation influencing factors.On the basis of the above analysis, the research design will adopt studydesign according to multiple case studies and grounded theory method. Amultiple case study will use subject selection stage, in accordance with theprinciple of theoretical sampling, selecting the creative team of24th WorldUniversity Students Winter Games opening ceremony, creative team of theopening ceremony of the2008Beijing Olympic Games, creative team ofHeilongjiang TV variety show as the objective the improvisation behavior studyobjective cases. This study will collect the first-hand data based on in-depthinterviews, and second data-hand collection based on the video data, documentinterviews, and other classic grounded theory method will be used in the dataanalysis process.Open decode, axis decode, selective decode process of grounded theory willbe applied to analyze the three selected cases in this study, refining44concepts,20categories,4categories relationships and a core category from Case A; inCase B, refining84concepts、33categories、4-category relationships and onecore category; in Case C, refining66concepts,20categories,5-categoryrelationships and a core category. In the case of independent decoding analysis,this research will not only analyze the category nature, the nature of thedimensions, but also focus on the category relationships refined by improvisationinducing process under limited resources condition (AAA), improvisationinducing process under task-driven condition (BBB), improvisation inducingprocess under innovation-driven condition (CCC), and specific analyze thethree core categories, identifying the relationship between one and othercategories. In the phase of multiple case comparison analysis, this study willclassify15category critical points from the multiple cases of numbers ofcategories to explore the common factors and nuances of the case. On the basisof analyzing the nature of the critical point, the research will identify thecommon key elements involved in the process of improvisation triggering andfinally explore the improvisation inducing process digging and analyzing therelationship of the categories and the core category of multiple cases.In the light of the results from Grounded theory analysis, the study willdepict the model of organization improvisation behavior inducing process, firstly propose the internal structure of the improvisation behavior, which includesantecedents (predisposing factors), affect variables (induced scenario), resultsvariables (improvised behavior, impact assessment); the improvisation behaviorhappened internal structure that covers rapid integration, re-defined, and theexchange of information, real-time learning; the four core categories ofimprovisation behavior inducing process clearly reflected basic characteristics ofthe creative act: the opportunity to identify, collect information, behavior (becreative), impact assessment, and will result a conclusion that the improvisationbehavior is consistent with the typical creative behavior in this study.
