The microbial pollution in animal farms is very serious, and chemical disinfectants are used widely, but the low efficiency and environmental pollution problems of them have been found. Slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) is a kind of broad-spectrum bactericidal efficiency and environmental friendly disinfectant, its application for disinfection in animal farms is an new try. As we all know, virus can host in cells and grow up. Based on this, the in vitro inactivation efficiency of SAEW on PRRSV and PRV suspensions was studied under laboratory conditions. Also, the disinfection effect of SAEW against the surfaces (concrete ground, steel and PVP material) and the air of a livestock house were simulated. After that, the slightly acidic electrolyzed water was used in the swine and layer barns, the microbial reductions before and after disinfection on the solid materials, facility surfaces and air were tested to assess the possibility of SAEW to replace chemical disinfectants currently used. The results obtained were as follows:1. SAEW with low ACCs of30-90mg/L were effective at inactivating PRRSV and PRV and had no significant effect on the host cells. The viricidal activity of SAEW increased with increasing the ACC, treatment time and temperature. Additionally, comparing with NaClO solution, SAEW has stronger disinfection efficiency on PRRSV and PRV, and the titers of them can be reduced easier.2. The disinfection activity of SAEW on facility surfaces increased with increasing the ACC. SAEW with an ACC of120mg/L reduced most of the E. coli and Salmonella on the surfaces of steel and PVP material, and the populations of mixed microbe on the surfaces of ground, steel and PVP material were reduced more than2.5log10CFU/cm. The microorganisms on the surface of steel can be removed easily, followed by the PVP material, and the concrete ground. Moreover, SAEW at an ACC of90mg/L can reduce more than80%of the airborne microbes in a simulation room, the disinfection effect increased barely with the increasing ACC.3. SAEW with an ACC of300mg/L reduced the microorganisms on the surface of wall, rail and ground significantly (P<0.05) in the swine barn, and flushing disinfection has a slightly better effect than spraying. Also,59%of the airborne microbes was greatly removed (P<0.05). Additionally, spraying EDP and PVP-Ⅰ solutions in the air resulted in less reduction in microorganisms than SAEW.4. SAEW with an ACC of250mg/L removed all the fungus and bacteria in the suspensions of manure, feed and feather were collected in the layer house in5min, reduced the microorganisms on surface of facilities significantly (P<0.05). Moreover, SAEW effectively decreased the survival rates of Salmonella and E. coli by19and16percentage points, and the population of total airborne microbes. The lowest populations of airborne bacteria and fungi in a day’s time were observed in30min after disinfection.
