| Chinese cognate words (or family words) are words which have the same origin, same(or similar) sound and similar meaning within Chinese language. Same sound means hanving the same source root words. There is a correspondence between the possible emergence of a group of cognate words of the same pronunciation. Similar meaning means the association of meaning, or explanatory, which accords with the general law, and means rational, which accords with human cognitive linguistics and cognitive psychology, and means can be confirmed, there may be evidence of linguistic words. The study on Chinese cognate words is a very complicated project, and it mainly focuses on body, sound and meaning at the level of ontological level of words. In this sense, the work of shuo wen tong xun ding sheng is actually a masterpiece of arranging by virtue of yun in the eighteen gu yun and analyzing semantics in details. In other words, this book is a work paying more attention to sound and meaning, created by Zhu Junsheng for all his lifelong time. Although the researches both on Chinese cognate words and the book shuo wen tong xun ding sheng have been undertaken in the academic circle from many perspectives, the study on shuo wen tong xun ding sheng from the perspective of cognate words rarely happened.The latter kind of study has been done in this dissertation, and some promising results have been obtained. In the first place, the quality and value of this book might be reassessed. It is not just a reference book for searching a lot of interpretations and looking into semantics, but a work of marking the transformation from traditional xun gu xue (exegetics) to modern semantic lexicology, with more or less some modern linguistic thoughts in the historical and academic circumstance at that time. On the other hand, by analyzing the book, we macroscopically abstract certain effective metaphysical theories and methods from specific operations used in the book by Zhu Junsheng. Microscopically, we have also done some textual research and the work of analyzing words family. To put it differently, we trace back to the source of words, and at the same time have a clear grasp on the relation between several meanings of words in synchronic level and the relation between words and words.The corpus (i.e. linguistic materials) employs the common version of shuo wen tong xun ding sheng, published in1984by Zhonghua Book Company. The content of this project is correcting errors in material texts and entering the electronic text by virtue of computer technology, and then construct database models for it to start exhaustive research. Therefore, sound and meaning correlation method and mathematical statistics method are used, and moreover, the work of cognate words connection has also been done.This dissertation consists5chapters and the number of words amouts to260,000. The Introduction introduces general situation of the project, predecessors’ works and materials, theories and methodology applied in the dissertation. The second chapter presents the background and status of the book shuo wen tong xun ding sheng, and its author’s life. The third chapter is concerning about the computer treatment of the materials. It includes not only the entering and error correcting of material text, but also the treatment of electronic text and model construction of database, the forth chapter is the most important part of the dissertation. It is mainly concerning about the study on shuo wen tong xun ding sheng and Chinese cognate words. It contains several aspects of this book:compilation style, yizuo, yisheng, yu mou tong Ive, yi mou wei zhi, zhuan zhu, jia jie, sheng xun, and their relation to Chinese cognate words. Many instances of specific cognate words are determined,and the last section summarizes results and lesson brought from previous study. Finally, chapter5drew conclusions and innovated achievements, and also indicate further problems and works in future study. |
