Shuo Wen Tong Xun Ding Sheng is written by Zhu Jun-sheng in the Qing Dynasty. "Shuo Wen", "Tong Xun", and "Ding Sheng" not only are basic contents of this book, also are its stylistic rules and layout. This book has great academic value. And it always has been highly regarded in academic circles. The academic circles focus mostly focal point of study on the part of "Tong Xun", while they cast few eyes of study on the contents of "Shuo Wen". There are not papers and works to analyze completely and summarize systematically contents and stylistic rules and layout of "Shuo Wen" presently. For the reasons this article takes "Shuo Wen" as object of study. The contents and stylistic rules and layout of "Shuo Wen" in Shuo Wen Tong Xun Ding Sheng can be divided into three parts on the whole: character pattern, signification, and pronunciation. The aspects of character pattern include: character of side note, character in a low square, character created late, repeated appearance character, addition to variant form of a character, removing variant form of a character from one place to another, difference between one character and another, identity between one character and another, a certain unit composed a character, similar intention to create some characters, a certain unit signifying meaning of a word, a certain unit signifying pronunciation of a character, arranging radical of characters, and other revision for character pattern, etc. The aspects of signification include: annotation to explanation of words in Shuo Wen Jie Zi, revision for explanation of words in Shuo Wen Jie Zi, semantic discrimination and analysis, relation to synonyms, and another meaning of a word, etc. The aspects of pronunciation include: binome, transformation of pronunciation, change of pronunciation, taking and using one character as another, expression with monosyllabic word, expression with double-syllable word, monosyllabic character composed of two syllable, long pronunciation, short pronunciation, overlapping-pronunciation word that is descriptive, monosyllabic word that is descriptive, etc.Achievements of "Shuo Wen" in Shuo Wen Tong Xun Ding Sheng are manifested: Zhu Jun-sheng's philological ideas and his revision for explanation in text of Shuo Wen Jie Zi. Limitations of "Shuo Wen" in Shuo Wen Tong Xun Ding Sheng are manifested: wrongly analyzing character pattern and meaning of word, confusing phonetic loan characters and ancient-modern characters or common source characters or variant form characters, repeated appearance of characters of side note, wrongly thinking combination of two synonyms as binome, etc. This article analyzed contents and stylistic rules and layout of "Shuo Wen" as well as its achievements and limitations from macroscopic angle, and discriminated and analyzed from microscopic angle some problems that earlier generations talked about such as character of side note, transformation of pronunciation, binome, overlapping-pronunciation word that is descriptive, monosyllabic word that is descriptive, etc. Meanwhile this article expounded some problems that earlier generations did not talked about such as character created late, character in a low square, relation to synonyms, etc. But this article doesn't cover all contents of "Shuo Wen". The author only chooses main contents of this book to expound. Although the author analyzes "quality" of concerned problems, this article is short of statistics of "quantity". Other problems left over from Zhu's book will be solved further.
