Study On The Three Books Of Zen Quotations Written In Chen Dynasty In Vietnam:on The Basis Of Documents,Characters And Volcaburary

Zen Quotations is a special type of Vietnamese Chinese Classics. It has a style inherited Chinese Zen Quotations, take notes of masters’ daily words and acts, and includes plenty of oral phenomena. Among the Zen Quotations there is a particular linguistic phenomenon called the blending of language elements, which is important material of studying the history of Chinese and Vietnamese vocabulary, as it contains both Chinese elements and traces of the Kinh language in Vietnam. Moreover, there is a great quantity of folk characters in the Vietnamese Zen Quotations. Studying them could enrich the Chinese character library, provide cases for the compilation of large dictionary and material for the studying of Chinese folk characters, and carry forward the intensive study of the Chinese-character cultural circle. This thesis take three books of Zen Quotations written in Chen Dynasty in Vietnam, Chanyuanjiying, Shengdeng Yulu, Huizhongshangshi Yulu as study objects, along with other linguistic data from existing Vietnamese Chinese Classics and Chinese Buddhist sutras and other books. This thesis undertake a comprehensive study on the three books from views of editions, textual criticism, folk philology, and exegesis.This thesis contains6chapters.Chapter1. Introduction. It includes the origin of choosing this topic, the situation and sense of studying the three books, and the studying contents and methods.Chapter2. Edition study of the three books. We tried to collect the block-printed and hand-copied editions as many as possible, and present the origin and development of editions of each book by dating them by preface and type area and so on, and using others’study achievements for reference. At last we took those printed or copied nicer and with less mistakes as master copies, and others as proofreading copies.Chapter3. Textual criticizing of the three books. After ensuring the master copies and proofreading copies, we classified the errors in the books as five kinds:similar pronunciations, reverse words, lost words, extra words. A criticizing table is attached after this thesis. The study of editions and textual criticizing is the basis of intensive study of linguistic phenomenon in a book. Chapter4. The study of folk characters in the three books. This chapter is a philology study of the three books centered on folk characters, including seven aspects:the definition of folk characters and the difference between folk characters and normal characters, the situation of foreign fold characters study, the states of folk characters in the three books, summary and conclusion of the folk characters and dividing them by structures into six types:simplifying element, multiplying element, changing ideographic element, changing phonetic element, and changing folk-written element, summarizing the features of newly-made Vietnamese folk characters, and discussion of the effect of studying folk characters in the three books.Chapter5. Vocabulary study of the three books. This chapter consists of three aspects:description of the vocabulary situation of the three books and discussion of their features and constitution, investigation of six synonym groups:congming, chujia, lingwu, wudao, boxue, canxue, and qushi, and annotation of more than30obscure and new words. There are not too many annotation of obscure words in this thesis, but among them, we could get a general impression of the vocabulary features of Zen books in Chen Dynasty and Vietnamese Chinese Classics. For example, the new words and new meanings in Zen books in Chen Dynasty are mostly disyllabic and polysyllabic words, and the main word-building law is synonym using together.Chapter6. Conclusion. This chapter concludes the research contents and explain the features of the linguistic phenomena such as Chinese characters and words in Vietnamese Chinese Classics. It also clarifies the limitation of this thesis and the direction of intensive study.
