In an era of the major development, the major adjustments and the great change,China is undergoing a comprehensive and profound social change. Social change willbe accompanied by collision and conflict of social values system. It will also lead toadjustment and reconstruction of social values system. Both in ancient and moderntimes, throughout Chinese and foreign histories, including the European Renaissance,the Religious Reform and the Enlightenment; Japan’s Meiji Restoration; theContention of a Hundred Schools of Thought in Chinese Qin Dynasty, the NewCulture Movement during the May Fourth, the big discussion on the criterion of truthand the big controversy over capitalism and socialism in the early period of reformand opening up, as well as today’s controversy over Universal Values, the ChineseModel and so on, historical incidents show that the more intense social change is, themore profound the collision and conflict of social values are. As the old values systemdisintegrate and the new values system yet to be established, added with diverse andvaried values, it is bound to cause difficulties in terms of values option and valuesconfusion, even difficulties in the whole social values system.The course of human history shows that a society and nation has its own corevalues system. It is the basic spiritual condition on which a social order is based, sothat the social order, built on certain mode of production, is able to maintain.Contemporary Chinese socialist core values system is China’s spiritual condition for acontinuing sound functioning of the society. It points out the fundamental valueorientation of contemporary Chinese social development and provides the inherentvalues basis for the contemporary Chinese social system construction. It is the soulsupport by which we uphold the self-confidence of the theory, the system and the road.Meanwhile, today’s China, the significant increase of the country’s comprehensivenational, the significant improvement of national quality, the rapidly-enhancedstrength in its international status and the increasing international influence, all theseprovide solid foundation and favorable conditions for contemporary Chinese socialistcore values system construction.By taking Marxism as a guide, based on the basic national conditions of thecontemporary socialism with Chinese characteristics, this paper conducted an in-depthanalysis on the basic concepts of contemporary socialist core values system of China, ideological and theoretical sources and the basic situation faced by China. We should start from the actualsituation of China’s economic and social development perseveringly, accurately locatethe China’s position in world history, conduct more extensive and intensive theoreticalstudy and practical exploration, and promote the construction of the system, accordingto its own internal law of development.
