The modern history of China is one full of vicissitudes. With large-scale invasion of foreign capitals and culture and emergence of the Westernization Movement, batches of national industrial and commercial enterprises with modern commodity characteristics have emerged in China. In the late 19 th century, the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Region(hereinafter abbreviated as Su-Xi-Chang Region)embarked on the path of developing national industry and commerce. Before being occupied by Japanese invaders in 1937,the development of national industry and commerce reached a peak in the Su-Xi-Chang Region, turning the latter into one of the renowned industrial and commercial region in China.A batch of modern industrial and commercial businesspersons sprang up in the region. These business persons were equipped with both traditional Chinese Confucian ideas and Western modern commercial culture. They were not only good at operation and management, but also determined to dedicate themselves to the motherland.Gradually,a dominating,public-oriented and epochal industrial and commercial culture with a far-reaching impact on the neoteric architectural style in the Su-Xi-Chang Region took shape. This paper proceeds from the industrial and commercial culture, and studies the mechanism about how the industrial and commercial culture exerted an impact on the regional architectural style. This paper starts with theoretical construction of the impact mechanism of the industrial and commercial culture on the architectural style.First, theoretical connotation and essential attributes of the modern industrial and commercial culture in the Su-Xi-Chang Region are clarified.Second, the impact of the modern industrial and commercial culture in the region on the regional architectural style is demonstrated. The connection between the industrial and commercial culture. The neoteric architecture style is built from six perspectives, namely psychology, behavior, logics, essence,Industrial Revolution, and industrial development, respectively. This makes it possible for this paper to study the research issue from both the microscopic and macroscopic patterns. Then, the impact mechanism of the industrial and commercial culture on the neoteric architectural style is examined from the microscopic perspective.First,it is found out that the impact mechanism is reflected as collage of symbols from the microscopic perspective, and the collage style can be further divided into three kinds, including cited collage, distorted collage and recombined collage.Second, the decorative symbol system, such as the hilltop, the window hole and the wall;the structural symbol covering the column, the arch, etc.;and the functional symbol system consisting of the balcony, the foyer, the dormer and the prince building—these three symbol systems are analyzed in terms of the cited and distorted collage model.Third,in terms of the recombined collage model,26 neoteric architecture examples in the Su-Xi-Chang Region are listed to illustrate the collage model.Next, the impact mechanism of the industrial and commercial culture on the neoteric architectural style is examined from the macroscopic perspective.First, style is defined as decided by major parts of the mass, major decorative parts and major characteristic parts;characterized by homogenous demonstration, cultural identification and evolution;and formed based on cultural, era and economic conditions.Second,42 neoteric architecture examples in the Su-Xi-Chang Region are listed to classify the regional neoteric architecture into three categories and seven architectural styles. The three architectural categories include imitated classicism, early modernism, and improved version of the traditional styles.Under the category of imitated classicism, there is the Northern American colonial style, the Southeast Asian colonial style, and the eclecticism style;while under the category of the early modernism, there is the art nouveau style, the art deco style and the expressionism design. Finally, characteristics of the industrial and commercial culture impact mechanisms and its follow-up impacts are explored.First, through comparison, the shared characteristics of the industrial and commercial culture and other culture in impacting the architectural style are analyzed.Such similarities are originated from the macroscopic cause of cultural collision and the impact of Western styles. However, they also have their differences. In terms of formation causes of their individual characteristics, the impact of the former is active, but that of the latter is compulsory. In terms of the formation process, the impact of the former is reflected as grafting, but that of the latter is reflected as transplanting. In terms of the reflection scope, the impact of the former is selective, but that of the latter is comprehensive. In terms of the dominating will, the impact of the former is subjective, but that of the latter is objective. In terms of the results, the impact of the former is scattering, while that of the latter is in batches. In terms of the expression form, the impact of the former is mixed, but that of the latter is sheer.Second, the follow-up impact of the industrial and commercial culture on the architectural culture is verified, which is mainly demonstrated as representation of art deco after the end of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, and extension of art deco after emancipation of China. The art deco style has thus started development and inheritance of the neoteric architecture in the Su-Xi-Chang Region under the impact of the regional industrial and commercial culture.
