Objective : By collecting prescriptions containing Pinellia ternata from various dynasties, creating information database of prescriptions, the dosage, dosage forms, and indications and compatibility of the drug were used for data mining. Basing on the relationship between its toxicity and efficacy and different syndromes, to explore the compatibility rule about Pinellia ternata in order to provide theoretical basis for reasonable clinical application. Methods:Combined Chinese medical literature with statistics. 1. Using methods from Chinese medical literature to sort records about toxicity and efficacy of Pinellia ternata out of literature from various dynasties, then to analyze related influencing factors. 2. Data mining methods were applied to research the attenuation and synergism of Pinellia ternata.3. Using association analysis, it aims to uncover correlation between prescriptions and herbs and diseases and syndromes, and to figure out general herbs combinations, dosage forms, dosage, administration routes and so on in different syndromes of rhizoma pinelliae.Result : 1. Summarized correlative factors that affecting toxicity and efficacy of Pinellia ternata, mainly including original producing area, harvest, preparation technology, dosage, decocting method, syndromes and compatibility rule and so on. 2. Created information database of prescriptions of Pinellia ternata, including 2868 prescripions, involving 663 kinds of herbal medicine, 393 kinds of diseases and 182 kinds of syndromes.3. Summarized application principle of Pinellia ternata. The processed drug is used formost of oral dosage of Pinellia ternata, while Pinellia ternata is used for majority of external prescription. The majority oral medicines are within 3~9g which is the scope of<Pharmacopoeia of China>. Larger dosage is used in treating sthenia syndrome of the Department of internal medicine diseases such as up-rushing gas syndrome, chest oppression, stroke and syndrome of wind-phlegm accumulation, while less dosage is used in treating pediatric diseases. 5. Pinellia ternata is widely used to treat vomiting sickness, distention and fullness, cough diseases, phlegm retention, exogenous febrile disease, skin and external diseases, hyperemesis gravidarum, infantile convulsions pharyngitis and so on,and to be more common in damp-phlegm syndrome based syndrome of excess or deficiency complicated with excess, which is involved in the department of internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics and facial features and other branches.Conclusion:1. Toxicity and efficacy of Pinellia ternata are all due to its nature. The main effects include eliminating dampness, reducing phlegm, calming the adverse-rising energy and eliminating stagnation, while its characterizations include hot dry powder and acrid opening and bitter downbearing. The most important attribute of its toxicity is Pungent bitter dryness, separated and body sliding bias. While the main mechanism is consumption of Yin(fluid, blood), consuming Qi, slipping diarrhea. Sore throat and mouth, lockjaw send spit, vomit acid less food, inverse gas and full of anger, injured fetus and abortion is the main characterization of its toxicity. 2. Check and balance the toxicity of harm or benefit, it is the key to maximize the effectiveness of Pinellia ternata in clinical application. 3. Based on accurate syndrome differentiation, achieve the effect of reducing toxicity and increasing efficacy through drug compatibility. Other important factors to ensure the safe and efficacy of Pinellia ternata rational use include moderate dosage, reasonable preparation, optimized dosage form, proper administration route and so on.
