Among numerous factors affecting the development of an enterprise, institution is a factor that can't be ignored. To what extent and how the informal factors in the regional culture influenced the development of enterprises, although the academia has made some theoretical studies, they seldom tested these questions empirically. Especially, these studies focus on the cultural heritage and don't discuss the effect of cultural change. Cultural change mainly comes from conflict and exchange between different cultures. Thus, how the conflicts and exchange could be adopted into the development of enterprises, the answer to this question was significant.Through combing the development of modern Chinese history, this paper founded that the Protestant responsibility ethics had some effects on people in modern China which was dominated by the Confucian education, so there were the conflicts between the modern culture and the Confucian clan ethics. Based on this point, this paper adopted the quasi natural experiment which was produced in the development of the modern Chinese history, combined the relatively closed social and geographical situation in the modern China, and studied the influence of the conflicts and exchange of the historical culture factors on the development of enterprises. Therefore, according to the conflict and exchange of historical culture in China, at first, this paper establishes the conceptual model and analytical framework based on the effects of the historical culture of China society and impacts of foreign ethics and institutions upon the developmental relationship of enterprises. Further, the development of enterprises is measured by the number of enterprise per capita and number of private businesses per capita. The extent of Confucian cultivation is measured by the number of Jinshi at different regions of China in the Qing Dynasty. The influence of Protestant responsibility ethics is measured by the proportion of protestant in the population. The development of market consciousness is measured by the cities opened by treaties in China after the Opium War. When modern survey data of different regions is matched, research is made about the relationship between Confucian cultivation, responsibility ethics according to the development level of local enterprises in different regions. Then, this paper builds an econometric model.Through the above researches, this paper gains the main conclusion. Generally speaking, Protestant responsibility ethics has a positive effect on the development of contemporary enterprises. This paper further discusses the approaches for historical and cultural factors to influence enterprises'development. On the one hand, Confucian edification has a positive effect on Confucian clan ethic, but Protestant ethic has weakened the above positive effect. The major academic contributions of this paper are that for the first time, it puts forwards the theoretical model based on Confucian cultivation and protestant responsibility ethics, which provides new and more comprehensive research framework for the analytical path of influence mechanism about the influence of religious ethics upon behavioral selection and regional economic growth adopted by modern literature. Meanwhile, it concludes that Protestant responsibility ethics could promote the development of enterprises by weakening Confucian Clan ethics, which provides evidence to Weber's proposition. In addition, the complete database of Jinshi in Qing Dynasty is developed, and treated as the measurement benchmark against the degree of some region being affected by Confucian cultivation. This approach provides references for relevant empirical researches. Therefore, this paper gradually unfolds its discussion through the raising of the problem, research background, theoretical analysis, research assumption, quantitative outcome and its mechanism and research conclusion. The research problem is raised, introducing the research approaches adopted in this article ad the overall framework of the article in part 1; In part 2, both Chinese and English literature regarding the institutional factors affecting the development of an enterprise is reviewed and the relevant research outcomes are evaluated; In part 3, the backgrounds upon which modern China was affected by Confucian cultivation, transmission of Protestantism and ports opened by cities are briefly introduced; In part 4, it discusses the measure methods of Confucian cultivation, Protestant responsibility ethics and ports opened by cities. In part 5, through theoretical analysis, the analytical framework of the conflict and exchange of modern China cultures, and their influences upon the development of enterprise is raised. What's more, the basic assumption is proposed and the measurement model is developed; Then it discusses the problems of how to measure the variables and how to collect data; Empirical examination is made for relevant research assumptions; In part 6, it explains the ethics mechanism for which Confucian cultivation and Protestant responsibility ethics affected the development of an enterprise; In part 7, based on the review of research outcomes, it points out the deficiency of research of this paper and the following research direction.
