Anne Bogart is a very colorful director and professor. Her methods of directing are globally well known. Many major theatre academies in the world offer courses in the methods she's using and many main theaters have directors who are exploring her ways of creating and directing.Bogart's way of directing is centered around three main methods: Mary Overlie's the Viewpoints,Aileen Passloff's Composition and the Suzuki method of actors training. It is also very much centered around the post-modern Ideas of a non-hierarchal working space,in which the director participates in the creation of the performance on equal terms with the actors and all the other members of the creative team. The director is still the coordinator and the one with the final say in case of a conflict, not because she takes this power, but because she is given the power by others. This thesis explores the development and content of the directing methods of Anne Bogart from the perspectives of theory, history, philosophy and practice, respectively. It studies Anne Bogart's rehearsal and creating processes, her views on theatre and the three major systems of her methods; It studies Anne Bogart's historical position in the American as well as the global theatre development; It studies how the Chinese ”Tao Te Ching” and Tai Chi have influenced Anne Bogart's directing style.Further on,this thesis also studies the opportunities and chanllenges of applying Anne Bogart's directing methods in China. It turns out that the methods effectively explore the potential of the Chinese actors' creativity.Meanwhile,it is also a fact that Bogart's requirement on equality conflicts the mainstream of traditional methods.Difference could be divergence, but by meeting each other it could also turn into diversity thereby opportunity. In terms of directing,Anne Bogart is certainly doing the latter.
