When guitar player first start improvising, they basically just played these basic scales, such as the major and minor scales, and the pentatonic scales.Diminished scale is familiar to most guitar players but they don't really know what it is,and it's also an important scale in learning jazz improvisation.Because we hear a lot of diminished seventh chords, dominant seventh chords, and major minor 251 progressions in a lot of music styles and especially in jazz, the basic major and minor scale won't be enough for musicians to outline such complex harmonic progression. So it's very important for improvisation to master the diminished scale. This paper will first introduce the structure of the diminished seventh chord and the sound effect produced by its application in the song. Then the composition of the diminished scale, its distribution on the guitar fingerboard and how to practice are introduced, and the advantages of the diminished scale in guitar playing are fully explained. Then the application of the diminished scale in guitar improvisation is further discussed.
