A Study On The Campus Culture Of Chinese Missionary Universities In Modern Times (1879-1952)

The educational philosophy and running model of western university have been brought into Chinese missionary university in modern times,which is a pioneer in new higher education and the paragon of other types of universities of the same period.During the development process of more than half a century,the modern Chinese missionary university has gained fundamental achievements that are beyond its scale of running a school.This has a close connection with the process of localization and secularization,whose one of driving forces is cultural exchange mainly on the campus culture of missionary university between china and western.Campus culture is to a university what sunshine and water is to vegetation.The achievements of Chinese missionary university benefit from the good campus culture's formation,so the first-class campus culture is also called for today's university in China.The thesis is aiming at providing suggestions for construction of campus culture in Chinese contemporary universities through researching on the campus culture of Chinese missionary university in modern times.Firstly,this paper mainly describes the development history of Chinese missionary university in modern times and its campus culture.Chapter two is divided into four historical periods of the development of Chinese missionary university,and according to the Chinese missionary university in different periods of development.In this paper,the campus culture of Chinese missionary university is divided into three stages:sprouted in the feudal society,foreignize development before registration registration,localization development after registration registration.Then,introduces the main contents of its campus culture Chinese missionary university in modern times according to the existing forms of the campus culture,and analysis of its subject.Thirdly,analyze the influencing factors of campus culture of Chinese missionary university.The influence factors of campus culture construction of the Chinese missionary university are divided into two parts,which are internal conditions and external environment,and the internal conditions include religion,campus management and material conditions,the external environment mainly includes the political,economic and culture of Chinese society.According to the influence factors in different periods,this paper analyzes the influencing factors from four angles,the advantages,disadvantages,opportunities and threats,and explain the localization and the secular of the development process of the campus culture of Chinese missionary university.Once again,makes an analysis of its characteristics,think there are three main points:with the Christian spirit as the core,the religious atmosphere is strong;the international level is high,the trans cultural exchange is frequent;the western culture is the mainstream,compatible with Chinese traditional culture.and analyzes the historical functions of campus culture of Chinese missionary university from positive and negative aspects.Finally,makes an analysis of the enlightenments for building the campus culture of Chinese universities.According to the construction experience of Chinese missionary university in modern times,respectively,from four aspects of material culture,institutional culture and spiritual culture and behavior culture,and tap its implications for today's Campus Culture Construction in China,combined with its experience and lessons in the process of cultural exchange,we can provide reference for the construction of campus culture in Colleges and universities.
