Urban agglomeration is the main form of the new-pattern urbanization in China. Those areas are playing important role in promoting regional equivalent and China's international competitiveness.Bearings the densest population and the most frequent socio-economic activities, the land-use of urban agglomeration areas are facing huge challenge. Therefore, figuring out how to optimize the land use allocation in urban agglomerations is an urgent research subject.Current researchers have gained lots of achievements in spatial analysis of China's main urban agglomerations, while deep exploration on the essential features and core mechanisms is still deficient. Therefore, this research tries to get rid of the limits of present urban agglomerations, and find out new perspective from classical theories.Garden City theory is a classical planning theory, which is regarded as the origin of urban agglomeration. It has wide influence both on academic studies and planning practices.Based on theory evaluation, applicability judgment and mechanism analysis, this research tries to proposing a urban agglomeration model under Chinese context-Garden Cities Agglomeration. As an integration of optimized spatial characteristics,Garden Cities Agglomeration is regarded as the object of land use optimization for urban agglomerations in China, and the connotation and patterns for optimization are thus obtained.Following studies were mainly carried out in this research:(1)The system of Garden City theory, which includes the original idea, its academic extension and planning practices, was collated.Further evaluation and judgment were conducted based on the theory system and China's development context, and the basic features of Garden Cities Agglomeration on hierarchical structure, spatial development unit, and urban-rural relationship were discussed.(2)With the scale transformation from microscopic to macroscopic, the constitution, allocation and evolution of the territorial function in parcel, development unit and hierarchical system were analyzed.Several new prospective including the diminishing marginal utility of a spatial development unit in supporting functions, the hierarchy of urban agglomeration's needs and the function allocation caused by it,etc..All these perspective can be helpful for understanding territorial function in urban agglomeration context.(3)Garden Cities Agglomeration was proposed based on the former two parts. The main characteristics on its development principles and objectives, spatial elements, and hierarchical structure were presented, thus the Garden Cities Agglomeration could be clear enough for guiding optimization of urban agglomerations.(4)The content and specific patterns were proposed based on the Garden City Agglomeration and the interactive mechanism among competitiveness, territorial function and land use of an urban development unit presented in the Garden City Agglomeration. The define or calculation of core parameters were further discussed.Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration was analyzed as a study case,on both micro and meso-scale.The Garden City Agglomeration re-excavated the classical theory, and is a meaningful attempt on land use optimization of urban agglomeration.Discussions on the evolution mechanism of territorial functions, the content and pattern of land use optimization and other issues in urban agglomeration context in this paper are helpful for the deeper and further understand of its essential mechanisms. The idea and conclusion of this paper are referential for the development and optimization of urban agglomerations in China.
