Study On The Mechanism Of Enterprise Open Innovation From Institutional Perspective

In an era of information,network and sharing economy,communication and cooperation are getting increasingly closer and more frequent between organizations.With openness has already become new option for most of the enterprises development,creation and sharing are also upgrading to become a hot topic in academia and practice.Therefore,scholars have conducted considerable theoretical discussions on the new open innovation models when various sizes of enterprises at the same time actively performed them and getting abundant theoretical aspirations and practical experience.Even so,due to some limitations like the lack of recognition,comprehension and application of these models,difficulties and problems of introduction and implementation are still in the way of open innovation development.Under this situation and especially with the conditions of Chinese regime,the innovation and entrepreneurship in China,theoretical knowledge and discussions in depth are still far from enough about what and how to be open,what kinds of open innovation should enterprises introduce and how they put into effect.Based on innovative systematism prospective,this essay redefined the concept of the open innovation of enterprises and,by utilizing methods such as item,reliability and exploratory factor analysis in 229 pretests and 426 formal questionnaires,developed a measurement scale on it.The writer also attempted to integrate relevant theories of innovation between strategic management and construct an analytical framework following a logic of “environment---strategic---innovation---performance” so as to pathbreakingly discuss the introduction and implementation of open innovation practices of enterprises from the perspective from a manager.All these are laid on literatures reviewing and theoretical analysis.With questionnaire statistics from 426 enterprises,it uses analytical methods of multivariate regression analysis and structural equation modeling to empirically verify the research hypothesis and the overall conceptual framework.Robustness and applicability of empirical results are also verified with statistics from 8809 technological firms.The results suggest:(1)The content structure of open innovation practices of enterprises comprises three layers or five dimensions,which the former means opening of mind and culture,innovation activities,and organizational support,the latter means there are three sub-dimensions called Inbound,Outbound and Coupled open innovation activities in the opening of innovation activities,and the layer of opening of mind and organizational support are two dimensions.(2)Institutional environment itself,its compositional strategy and their combination can influence enterprises open innovation,directly or indirectly,separately or interactively.(3)Despite the direct influence on innovation performance,different combinations among Inbound,Outbound and Coupled open innovation activities take effect differently on firm performance.Once the scales and fields but part of the ages of enterprises change,the influence also change.(4)Except for the direct improve innovation performance,free combinations among open innovation culture,open innovation activities,and open innovation organizational support can improve the performance of enterprises.(5)Manager's cognitive appraisal can be measured through the following three aspects: perceived legitimacy,usefulness,and ease of use.Besides,manager's cognitive appraisal can not only promote enterprises to introduce open innovation practices under the guidance of external institutional environment and internal compound strategic orientation,but also enhance them and have better result.(6)“SSIP analytical framework”,a “newly-developed tool”,which that it has quite good scientificity and robustness.The findings of this research not only expands the intension and extension of enterprise open innovation,but also found that institutional environment for innovation and entrepreneurship is an important antecedent of enterprises to adopt open innovation,which enriches the research results of open innovation in the context of Chinese institutional situation,and broadens the theoretical perspective of open innovation research and provides a new framework for research and analysis.In addition,this paper extends the intension of managerial cognitive appraisal and helps to clarify the internal mechanism of open innovation,and provides theoretical support and empirical support for enterprise open innovation management.
