Open innovation enables enterprises to broaden their channels of innovation so that they can get more innovative resources. In practice, existing enterprises implement open innovation to solve efficiency problems, while new ventures implement open innovation to solve survival problems. In theory,it is believed that the processes and purposes of open innovation in existing enterprises are different from those in new ventures. Therefore, both existing enterprises and new ventures need to formulate open innovation strategies suitable for their own development characteristics. However, there are some key questions still unanswered in current research. For existing enterprises,it is not yet clear what kind of degree of openness improves performance. And the degree of openness is the degree to which enterprises implement open innovation. For new ventures,it is still unknown which strategies are beneficial to the survival of new ventures in the process of implementing open innovation.Based on the above research context, this dissertation comprehensively uses a variety of research methods such as normative research, regression analysis, mathematical model and case analysis to study the core issue “open innovation strategies of existing enterprises and new ventures”.Furthermore, the existing enterprises are divided into small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs)and large enterprises.Specifically, this dissertation focuses on the following research contents:Firstly, this dissertation investigates the degree of openness for SMEs.This dissertation uses regression analysis method to study the relationship between the degree of openness and the performance for SMEs,and draws the following conclusions: In cooperation with non-competitors,when the market competition is strong,SMEs should formulate a greater degree of openness(breadth search and depth search);in cooperation with co-opetitors,when market competition is strong,SMEs should choose a lower degree of openness(depth search).Secondly, this dissertation investigates the degree of openness for large enterprises. This dissertation first explains the reasons why some large enterprises choose to open part of their proprietary resources and choose a greater degree of openness.First, openness reduces innovation cost;second, openness enhances the value of complementary resources still controlled by large enterprises;third, openness increases social welfare and enhances the reputation of large enterprises. Then this dissertation analyzes the optimal decision-making on the degree of openness for large enterprises, and draws two conclusions.First,in order to achieve the optimal performance, the more resources owned by large enterprises, the greater the degree of openness should be;second,in order to achieve the optimal performance, the smaller the complementarity of resources, the greater the degree of openness should be.Finally, this dissertation investigates the strategy formulation for new ventures in the process of open innovation.Through multi-case analysis method, this dissertation explores which strategies are conducive to the survival of new ventures in the process of acquiring key resources through open innovation. The results show that successful new ventures build trust and cooperation with familiar partners, and trust comes from existing social relationships.Second, successful new ventures voluntarily abandon the pursuit of maximizing short-term benefits, instead they hold golden mean thinking, and actively give part of the benefits to their partners on the premise of ensuring their own interests.Third, both successful new ventures and their partners are concerned about the long-term cooperative relationship between the two sides and uphold the doctrine of the golden mean thinking. This dissertation provides a theoretical basis for SMEs,large enterprises and new ventures to formulate appropriate open innovation strategies.
