Nowadays, great changes have taken place in the business environment of enterprises. With the rapid development of information technology and the acceleration of economic globalization, enterprises are facing more environmental uncertainties. In this environment,it highlights the importance of enterprise innovation. In order to promote the transformation and development of the economy, the 18 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China clearly put forward the innovation driven development strategy, and issued relevant policies and financial support."Mass entrepreneurship and innovation" has set off an upsurge of national innovation and entrepreneurship. At the same time,it has become a hot topic for scholars.Among them, how to achieve and improve innovation performance has become a hot topic in strategic management research. The literature shows that the research on the direct impact of top managers on enterprise performance has formed an obvious literature flow.Extensive research has also been carried out on the research of managers' personal characteristics, but the research on the influence of top managers' cognitive style on innovation performance,Especially through the transmission mechanism of mediating variables, there are few literatures that deeply analyze the indirect influence of managers' cognitive style on innovation performance. Therefore, based on the research clue of "cognition behavior result",this paper studies the mechanism of managers' cognitive style on enterprise innovation performance in the context of China's transitional economy and China's unique institutional environment. The innovation activities and innovation performance of enterprises are affected by both internal activities and external environment.Managers are an important part of enterprise organization.Due to the differences of managers' cognitive styles, when facing the change of external environment, they will have different interpretation and response actions. These actions will affect the strategic choice and strategic decision-making of enterprises, and then affect the performance of the organization. However, there is little in-depth research on how managers' cognitive style affects innovation performance. Therefore, this paper introduces two mediating variables, innovation orientation and knowledge creation process,to study the mechanism of different managers' cognitive style influencing enterprise technological innovation performance. In addition, the environment of the enterprise is dynamic, and the external institutional environment will have an impact on the management behavior and cognitive style of managers.Based on this, this paper takes the uncertain concept of institutional environment as the moderating variable, and introduces the research framework to explore the relationship between different cognitive styles of managers and innovation performance.Based on the higher-order theory, cognitive style theory, innovation oriented theory, social cognitive theory, resource advantage theory, knowledge creation theory and system foundation view, this paper constructs a conceptual model of the relationship between managers' cognitive style and enterprise innovation performance. At the same time,it proposes that managers' cognitive style has a positive impact on enterprise innovation through three dimensions: planning, creativity and learning New performance has a positive impact on innovation orientation, and has a positive impact on knowledge creation process.Knowledge creation process and innovation orientation play a double mediating effect in the role of managers' cognitive style on innovation performance.Regulation, regulation and cognition of institutional environment play a moderating role in the role of different managers' Cognitive Styles on innovation performance. In order to verify the above views, this study selected 15 provinces and cities of Guangdong,Shanghai,Beijing,Jiangsu and Liaoning as samples to conduct a questionnaire survey.Structural equation modeling and bootstrap analysis are used to test the hypothesis. The empirical results show that: Managers' cognitive style has a predictive effect on innovation performance, innovation orientation and knowledge creation process have a chain mediating effect between managers' cognitive style and innovation performance, and institutional environment plays a moderating role between managers' cognitive style and innovation performance. Most of the hypotheses in this study are supported by the results of empirical tests.Specifically speaking, due to different cognitive styles, top managers will make corresponding choices and decisions on corporate strategy when they feel the change of external environment, and then have an impact on enterprise performance. As a result, the positive learning style of the enterprise managers, who are good at learning problems, have different cognitive styles, and have different learning styles The process of planning is a process of responding to external changes and constantly adjusting management. This process can stimulate the innovation behavior of the enterprise and improve the innovation performance of the enterprise The managers of creative cognitive style have creative thinking cognitive style, like to break the Convention and pursue innovation, which is conducive to the innovation performance of enterprises. Therefore, the creative cognitive style of managers positively predicts the innovation performance of enterprises. The special influence and decision-making power of managers in enterprises means that they have a significant voice in the strategic choice of enterprises, and the formation of these strategic choices is closely related to the cognitive style of managers. As an important strategic choice of enterprises, the intensity and level of implementation of innovation orientation are closely related to the cognitive style of managers. At the same time, innovation orientation affects the generation of new knowledge and technology, which become the key driving force for enterprises to realize new processes and develop new products. Therefore, innovation orientation and knowledge creation process play a chain mediating role in the relationship between managers' cognitive style and enterprise innovation performance. The dynamic interaction between system and organization determines the strategic choice and performance of enterprises. In the process of continuous transformation of China's current system, the complexity and dynamics of system constantly reshape managers' cognition and behavior mode, which is an important influencing factor for managers to make decisions.According to Scott(1995),institutional environment can be divided into three dimensions:regulatory environment, normative environment and cognitive environment.Different institutional dimensions play different regulatory roles in the relationship between learning, planning and innovative cognitive styles on innovation performance.Regulatory environment has a significant negative impact on the relationship between learning cognitive style, creative cognitive style and enterprise innovation performance Cognitive environment significantly negatively moderates the relationship between creative cognitive style and enterprise innovation performance, while normative environment has no significant moderating effect on the relationship between learning, planning and creative cognitive styles and enterprise innovation performance. The conclusion of this study has certain significance and Enlightenment for theory and practice. In theory,in the process of improving the innovation performance of enterprises, managers need correct cognition and decision-making on how to better combine the changes of internal resources and external environment.Managers with different cognitive styles have different ways of thinking and decision-making behaviors when making decisions.Combined with the research paradigm of "cognition behavior performance",this study reveals for the first time that managers with different cognitive styles obtain results(innovation performance)through strategic choice(innovation oriented)innovation activities(knowledge creation process),which provides enlightenment for highlighting the role of cognitive factors in innovation, which has exploratory theoretical significance and is helpful to enterprises From different perspectives and ways of thinking, this paper examines the causes and mechanism of enterprise innovation activities.Secondly, this study measures the unique institutional environment(the last level system)in China's transitional period.Busenitz,Gomez and Spencer(2000)scale has a high degree of recognition.Although it has been adopted by many mathematicians, previous studies have taken the degree environment as a whole, and there is no distinction between the secondary system and the last level system. In fact, different institutional elements have different effects on the innovation performance of enterprises. This study clarifies the confusion in the measurement of institutional environment in previous studies, distinguishes the secondary system and the last level system of institutional environment, and clarifies the utility of busenitz,Gomez and Spencer(2000)scales in measuring the last level institution. It is concluded that under the exogenous conditions of legal level / property rights protection and other secondary institutional environment, the impact of non level institutional environment(government support and innovation funding policies)on enterprise innovation performance has a negative effect. Therefore,we must improve the quality of the secondary system(the level of rule of law,the degree of property rights protection, the process of marketization)to ensure the continuous growth of enterprise innovation performance. In practice, managers,as the backbone of enterprises, play an important role in enterprise innovation. This study empirically studies the difference of the impact of managers with different cognitive styles on innovation performance under the mediating role of the choice of enterprise innovation orientation and the process of knowledge creation within the organization. It enlightens enterprises that, first of all, according to the internal and external environment of enterprises, combined with the cognitive characteristics of high-level managers, carry out innovation activities to improve enterprise innovation performance.Secondly,we should fully realize the importance of innovative thinking and innovation orientation, cultivate innovation atmosphere within the organization, and improve the innovation enthusiasm and innovation ability of employees. At the same time, more attention should be paid to the process of knowledge creation and the construction of internal knowledge base.Through the management, sharing and creation of knowledge, the quality, ability and skill level of employees can be improved. The process of knowledge creation is also the improvement of innovation practice, which is conducive to innovation behavior and innovation performance. Finally, enterprises should pay special attention to the current economic environment, legal system and other factors. The limitations of this study are obvious. In terms of research methods, the data collected in this study are cross-sectional data, without considering the dynamic process and time lag effect of managers' cognition, innovation orientation, knowledge creation process, innovation performance, institutional environment. The sample size of this study is relatively limited, and future research should actively try various survey methods to expand the sample size and improve the universality of the research conclusions. Finally, the development of the scale used in this study is based on the western context. There are still some limitations in the application of the scale in the Chinese context.Future research should develop the scale based on the Chinese context.
