Exploring the impact of high-speed rail(HSR)network on station area is a hot issue in international academic research. In the context of rapid development of Chinese "eight length lines and eight breadth lines" HSR networks,it has become an important issue for academia and local government about how to undertake the impact, stimulate the development of station area and catalyze the local economy. However, due to an infancy stage of HSR-based station area and its complex development environment, studies on the effects of HSR on station area in China are relatively few.In addition, some limitations covering one-sided view, relationships among the effects of HSR and network attributes of HSR being ignored, and qualitative and linear methods being adopted and the like exist in previous studies. Therefore,it is of great theoretical and practical value to systematically explore the influence of HSR network on station area and grasp the interactive relation between the influencing factors(effect mechanism).Based on these,a combined thinking of theory and practice, qualitative and quantitative is adopted in this study to examine the effect mechanism of HSR network on HSR-based station area(nodal zone)in a networked, systematic and dynamic way.The detailed methods cover literature review, case analysis, network analysis, questionnaire survey, structural equation model and system dynamics et al.The main work is as follows:(1)HSR network model was built, and the temporal and spatial features of network evolution were identified.According to complex theory,2003-2015 HSR networks were achieved. Then, the node index(closeness degree and betweenness degree)and the structure indicator(average degree)were selected to identify the temporal and spatial features of HSR network. The results show that accessibilities of nodes are improved, but hierarchy gap exists;the compactness of network seems to be increase;unbalance exists in network nodes and network structure.(2)This study applied a term of nodal zone(NZ)to define a HSR-based station area, and its categories were identified.Based on case study, quantitative analysis and literature research,it was stressed that it is necessary and feasible to define HSR-based station area as nodal zone in the perspective of “node + place”.Then, the categories of nodal zones were identified by their location, function and network power. These findings establish the general cognition of this new urban form of a nodal zone, and its attributes of system, dynamic and openness are highlighted.(3)The conceptual framework of HSR network impacting NZ was proposed.A preliminary conceptual framework of HSR network impacting NZ was built by critically analyzing NZ models. Then, through literature, this study summarized specific effects of HSR,and classified them into four sub-systems(five parts),namely transport(transport situation and transport vitality),economy, society and physical environment sub-system.Based on these, the conceptual framework was improved by supposing that these five parts interact with one another and their interactions determine the development of NZ.These findings lay the foundation of system of HSR network impacting NZ from the perspective of interrelationship.(4)This study explored the effects and their relationship.First,a mixed method composed of literature review, case study and expert interview was applied,22 effects were achieved. Then, questionnaire survey and structural equation model were applied to investigate their relationship. Finally, the effect paths of HSR network on NZ were derived that HSR network ? transport situation ? transport vitality(environment sub-system)? social sub-system ? economic sub-system,HSR network ? transport situation ? transport vitality ? economic sub-system;13 key effects(e.g.,passengers volume, population of permanent residents)of HSR network on NZ are identified. These findings emphasize the essential,intermediate,knock-on effects of transport situation, transport vitality and environment sub-system,and modify the incompleteness of only focusing on one-sided effect of HSR network.(5)This study established and stimulated the effects mechanism model in a dynamic way.Based on system dynamics, the causal loops on transport, economy, society, and environment sub-systems were established, and then these loops were integrated into a whole causal loop of HSR network influencing NZ.In the basis of causal loops, this study further completed effects mechanism model through the refinement of these effects. Then,a case of Guangzhou south town was selected to simulate the effect mechanism of HSR network on NZ.It is found that HSR network actually impacts the development of NZs,however, the effect results are not significant in short time;the change of HSR network(average degree, betweenness degree and closeness degree)would not bring obvious impacts on the economy and society of NZ.This study explored the effect mechanism by identifying HSR network evolution ? defining HSR station area ? exploring effect set and paths ? simulating effects degree. This systematic perspective makes up for isolated and one-sided studies, and the proposed conceptual framework provides reference for future quantitative research.Whilst the study sheds light on the complex roles of HSR in the field of station area,it has some limitations(e.g.,incomplete effects)due to initial formation of HSR network, infancy stage of NZs and unobvious features.Future studies are thus recommended to explore and supplement the effects and their relationships between HSR and NZ by gathering more practical case data.
