Being points of arrival to and departure from metropolises, railway stations are essential components in urban planning.Furthermore, intermediate stations are a “part of community life”,since they serve multiple functions in society beyond the instrumental activity of facilitating the boarding of trains. The station architecture mirrors the different roles that the railway plays in society economically, politically and socially. For a railway station to serve the aforementioned functions, they have to have well-designed infrastructure and well-managed information during their whole lifecycle. This can be ensured by using Building Information Modeling(BIM)—a technology that generates, exchanges and manages the data of a facility throughout its whole lifecycle and represents it all in 3D model. This thesis studies the integration of BIM with artificial intelligence(AI)into the railway intermediate station domain, proposing an intelligent design system for planning the procedures of design phase. The knowledge base for this study consists of the design rules of different components of the intermediate station. The rules have first put into five main categories: station layout rules, passenger facility rules, freight equipment rules, station lines rules, and station plane calculation rules. The different components of the intermediate station are expressed in the form of If-Then rule because the statements can be conveniently encoded in a natural-language-like artificial intelligence language based on predicate calculus such as PROLOG.For implementing the intelligent design system, the thesis established a Station-Building Information Modeling(S-BIM),a preliminary prototype based on the object-oriented modeling methodology(OOM).Using principles of parametric geometry modeling, each component of SBIMs has parameters describing its geometry;intrinsic physical and functional properties;and constraints that describe its behavior, and relations to other objects.S-BIM is realized in Revit Architecture as BIM platform by supplying Revit with add-ins extension tool that has the design rules encoded in Microsoft Visual C# programing language. In order to improve the utilization efficiency of these models during the modeling process, the structural components of railway intermediate station are decomposed into the basic element models, where each basic element model has got a unique identifier. An object-oriented entity-relationship model is used to represent the relationships among the entity objects of intermediate station, where the objects are classified into three main categories:track, passenger facility, and freight equipment. As a result, the study provides an information-rich static model of the railway intermediate station in three different formats: 2D drawing views,3D station model, and output design data table. This research also tests and verifies the proposedprototype S-BIM by applying it into a real case study of HePing railway intermediate station,YunNan province,China. This thesis contributes to the body of knowledge mainly into two ways.First, establishing an intelligent design system for the railway intermediate station facilitates access to domain-related information and reduces the likelihood of repetition and human errors.Besides, the using BIM technology helps analyze potential impacts and work out possible problems virtually, even before the actual building starts. With its parametric modeling,S-BIM allows automatic document generation and coordination that revitalizes the design process of railway intermediate station, and breaks away from the drawbacks of traditional design. Finally, this study speculates that BIM will eventually lead to a complete virtual approach of the railway intermediate station, with a station project being completely simulated before being undertaken for real.Such approach can provide potential beneficial outcomes by enabling the rapid analysis of different scenarios related to the performance of a station through its whole lifecycle.
