Comprehensive Research Of Du Mu's Significance In Poetic History

This thesis will discuss Du Mu's significance in Chinese poetic history and poetic cultural history in two aspects.The first aspect is about the functions of Du Mu's creation leading poetic style in late Tang Dynasty.The second aspect is about the generative process of Du Mu's romantic and dissolute image,as well as its meaning in poetic cultural history.There are two volumes in this thesis.The first volume takes place in the poetic circle on the first half of 9th century.It mainly investigates which school Du Mu belongs to,his poetic idea origin,corresponding concrete objects and his function in changing the poetic style.Du Mu's most important poetic friends were Zhang Hu,Xu Hun,Zhao Gu,Li Qunyu,Li Ying and Li Yuan.While for "Yuan Bai",Li He,"Yao Jia" and other poets,he adopted critical or alienated attitude.Du Mu and his poetic friends were the new stars in the poetic circle of that time,who are similar with their lif'e experience,thought and character,creation and pursuit.So they always communicated with each cother.Actually that formed a new generation poetic group centered by Du Mu,which lead the orientation of poetic style together.In the mainstreaming progress of seven-character octave,Du Mu and his poetic group played a key role.Before that,the seven-character octave has been in the marginalized position,whose creative quantity was few and overall level was poor.But in the beginning of late Tang Dynasty,Du Mu and his poetic group were generally good at the seven-character octave,as well as paid attention to its creation.As a result,the seven-character octave became one of the representative poetic styles having the largest creational quantity and getting the highest achievements.The seven-character octave firstly stepped into the mainstreaming poetic style.At the same time,Du Mu and his poetic group played the important role in resisting some extreme tendencies of the poetic concept and style pursuit in mid-Tang Dynasty,as well as urging poetry to return to scholar tradition.During the poetic innovation in mid-Tang Dynasty,some extreme tendencies brought the destructive impact to some essential characteristics of scholar poetry.Du Mu and his poetic group devoted themselves to maintain the elegant tradition of scholar poetry and resist such anti-traditional creational tendency.Through the pursuit of elegant and beautiful style,they have effectively resisted the excessive development of vulgar tendency about"Yuanhe Style" and ended the continuation of strange poetic style.By moderately absorbing the creational style of Du Fu and Han Yu,who created poet with the scholarship,they added the literati stylization color to poetry.And their creative characteristic of literati stylization made the profound influence for the poetry in late-Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty.The second volume explores the generative,evolution process and the historic cultural connotation of Du Mu's romantic and dissolute image.It also explores its role and function in the later literature and culture as the cultural symbol.Du Mu's romantic and dissolute image impressed to the later generations is different from his original fact and psychological expectation.He made his image from three aspects:firstly,he vigorously shaped himself into a potential politician,who had the political and military talents without appreciation.Secondly,he conceited himself to have the refined demeanor of Wei and Jin period.Particularly,he liked to manifest his gentleman's demeanor.Thirdly,he didn't consider himself to be the romantic genius.Besides,for his official career and reputation,he had been keen to avoid the spread of his romantic image.The early generative process of Du Mu's dissolute image reputation mainly paid to the collection and spread of his romantic anecdotes and works by the five generations in late Tang Dynasty.Among them,many anecdotes and works were artificially faked,but receiving the wide spread,which terribly magnified Du Mu's romantic aspect.After that,the people in Song Dynasty played two important roles in the process of shaping Du Mu's romantic image:One,they paid their attention to a few the most wonderful anecdotes and works,which made his dissolute image more obvious and outstanding.Two,the scholars begun to image Du Mu by their own imaging expect and regarded him as their idol.In the period of Yuan Dynasty to Qing Dynasty,Du Mu's romantic and dissolute image was further shaped into several typical image symbols and highlighted.Then it became the main characteristic of Du Mu's image.Moreover,scholars' most representative attitude to Du Mu's romance changed from the beginning bystanders,curiosity and ridicule to more familiar agreement and imitation.Such change originated from the large appearance of scholars,who were of the romantic Du Mu's style.The established Du Mu's romantic image resonated with those scholars.Because of their talent without getting appreciation,they regarded Du Mu as their bosom friend.Because of their infatuation to the prosperous city,they took Du Mu as their idol.Or because of their emotion-centered and willful,they highly praised his romance.Du Mu's image became positive and idolization in the process of the continue recognizing.
