From 1927 to 1937,China had made some progress in finance, transportation, industrial development and the educational field.According to some scholars, these ten years under Nanjing administration could even be called "golden decade".Some researchers argue that Chinese industrial economy developed rapidly in this period. If Without Japanese aggression,Nanjing national government would have already began the new process of Chinese modernization. On the contrary, others explore that the industrial development at that time was decayed rather than improved, because of the influence of war, natural disasters and the world economic crisis, the industrial development appeared some recession. This dissertation examines the industrial development during this "golden decade",and tries to make a fair judgement. The study of modern industrial economy belongs to the category of economic history. This paper uses the economic theory, and analyzes the investment, production, market, position and so forth of the industrial economy. It mainly combines both the qualitative and quantitative study, and macroscopic and microscopic research, the former method of which will be principal in this thesis. The subject of this paper is the increment of Chinese industry in the first decade of Nanjing national government.By distinguishing and analyzing large amounts of data,it estimates the changing tendency of Chinese industrial production level and average rate of increment of Chinese industry in this period. The change tendency of capital and the change of market supply and demand are used to verify the credibility of the production level. This paper is arranged in the following way:according to some related standard, nine industry sectors which occupied large proportion of Chinese modern industry were selected as research objectives, including coal, iron, steel, electric power and machinery which belong to category ?,and cotton, textile, flour, tobacco, match and etc, which belong to category ?.A thorough study will be carried out from the perspectives of capital amount, production and production value, market supply and demand, and the changes of industrial position etc.The conclusion is:either from the amount of capital or the output level, modem industry between 1927 and 1931 basically appeared to be growing. After the northeast of china was lost, the speed dropped largely between 1932 and 1934.Then there was obvious recession in modern industry. After 1935 and 1936,the situation was improved. The demand of supply of the industrial market include the price, and the market supply and demand of industrial production, market price of industry production, the price, and the market supply and demand of raw material.Their changing tendency were almost in tune with the change of capital amount and output level. In conclusion, the average growth rate of modern Chinese industry in the first decade of Nanjing national government was between 2%to 3%,which is the conclusion of this dissertation. Some scholars'argument which concludes the average growth rate of Chinese modern industry in this period amounted to 8%-9%is not incredible.Generally speaking, there was some progress of Chinese industry in the first decade of Nanjing national government, and the condition of some industry sectors was not as bad as some researchers deemed. However, the speed of industry economical growth in this period was low,so it was not "golden decade" of industrial economy at least.
