Tibetan empire once conquered Dunhuang in A.D.786 and ruled for 62 years until A.D.848.Although there are very few records of this period both in Chinese and Tibetan traditional history books,a great many documents relevant to this period has been unearthed in Dunhuang,which undoubtedly make the research on this period possible.Besides,ancient people in Dunhuang continued digging grottoes and painting murals during this period and left a lot of archaeological materials which are much more vivid than documents.So this paper intends to do some research based on these Chinese and Tibetan documents and archaeological materials.It focuses on two subjects,the new administration system and ecnomic production.Of course,predecessors' achievements will be fully absorbed.This paper is consisted of two parts.The first part focuses on the new administration system,which contains three chapters.The first chapter is about the background of this period,which contains the decline of Tang Dynasty,the rise of Tibetan Empire,and wars between them before Dunhuang was occupied.It also describes many details of the occupancy.The second chapter is about the tribe system in Dunhuang at that time.Here the period is diveded into three stage,the initial stage,the medium stage and the later stage.This chapter also involves research on hundred orgnization and frankplege inside a tribe.The third chapter is about offical and military system that Tibetan Empire set in Dunhuang.The official system contains the superior official system and the local official system.Besides,this chapter also contains research on the basic military system.The second part focuses on ecnomic production,which contains three chapters.The forth chapter is about the economic systems during the period.It contains household registration system,land system,tax system and service system.The fifth chapter is about agriculture and animal husbandry.The sixth chapter is about handicraft manufacturing,containing metallurgy,textile,grain processing and others,and administration on handicraftsmen by government.
