Ever since the 19th century,the phenomenon of subtexts in Russian novels has aroused active concern among linguists and literary researchers.As the number of subtexts in novels continues to grow,and its technique of construction increasingly develops,subtext as a unique literary phenomenon began to be the object of scholars in fields of humanities.For Chinese readers and scholars,Russian literature,especially novel works,occupies a more special position,comparing with the works of other countries.The influence of Russian Novels on Chinese novels has a wide and far-reaching impact,as much as it on the world outlook and literary attainment of several generations of Chinese readers.The number of Chinese versions of the Russian novel works is of large volume,the translations of new works and the re-translations of old works emerge in an endless stream,and new generation of talented translators excels the last one.On the other hand,as one of the notable features of Russian novel works,subtext phenomenon has never been explained in a more systematic way.Its characteristics,classification,methods of interpretation and other aspects are still insufficient in research.This situation leads to the lack of standard in subtexts translation and randomness in translation strategy,and further leads to the uneven quality of the Russian novel translations.This dissertation aims at systematically studying the phenomenon of subtexts in Russian novels.It proceeds from its scientific principle,characteristics,classification,methods of construction,development and evolution,analysis method and translation strategy,integrates and innovates existing theories,tests and verifies new theory through practical translation,and provides a set of maneuverable methods,including subtext analyzing and translating.The study is divided into three parts,introduction,thesis body and conclusion.The Introduction part briefs the cause of this study and research status in this field,indicating advantages and insufficiency of existing theories,leading to theoretical and practical significance of the study,and introducing its theoretical basis,research methods,structure and innovative points.The thesis body part includes five chapters.Chapter one is Text and text analysis theory,which discusses main definitions of text theory,analyzes information structure of texts,especially the deep structure that contains implicit information,and then raises the issue for text analysis theory.Chapter two-Analytical approaches of literary texts.This chapter discusses psychological process of text analysis,leads to factors of literary texts analysis,and then discusses three categories,eight kinds of texts analysis factors and their weights and relationship,thus creating a model of texts analysis.Chapter three-Construction methods of subtexts in Russian novels.This chapter introduces subtext interpretation theories at home and abroad,revealing the close ties between subtext interpretation theories and texts analysis theories.After that,we classify subtexts in Russian novels by functions,discuss construction methods of all kinds,and establish linkages between construction methods of subtexts and texts analysis factors.Chapter four-Interpretation of subtexts in Russian novels.In this chapter,based on texts analysis model,we discuss subtext phenomenon in Russian novels from 19th century to contemporary,including novels of Mikhail Lermontov,Nikolai Gogol,Anton Chekhov,Andrei Bely,Mikhail Bulgakov,Yuri Bondarev,Fazil Iskander,Victor Pelevin and Alexandre Ilitchevski,analyze subtext construction methods and implication types of each writer,and reveal the track of their development and evolution.Chapter five-Translation methods and strategies of subtexts in Russian novels.Based on principles of subtext translation,this chapter discusses ethics and principles of subtext translation,such as no explicit translation,no omitting in subtext translation,no over-interpretation.At last,we discuss the translation methods and strategies of emotional subtexts and conventional subtexts with translation examples.The conclusion part re-clarifies theoretical sequence from Chapter one to Chapter five,briefly summarizes the logic of argument of this dissertation,and enhances the linkages between chapters.
