A Research On Xu Jiarui's Literature Ideology And Literature

Xu Jiarui is a well-known modern litterateur as well as a theorist and a historian in China.He has made great achievements in literary creation,local national and cultural research and folk literary and art collection by his profound academic foundation and broad academic views.“Civilian literature”existed in Xu Jiarui's academic studies and literary works all the time.Also,it is the movement by the collision of the new and the old ages as well as the product of the communication between Chinese traditional literature ideology and Western modern literature.In the age of Western learning being introduced into China,Xu Jiarui utilized advanced Western ideology and methods to study Chinese traditional literature,conducted literature creation and collected and organized folk literature,thereby forming his unique“Civilian literature”ideology.Methods of literature detailed reading,history analysis and comparative analysis are adopted in the thesis to study Xu Jiarui's“Civilian literature”and his projections in literature and history opinions and literature practices in the hope of improving the academic understanding of the values and historical status of Xu Jiarui's literature ideology.This thesis is divided into five parts.Chapter one to chapter three are the main body and the rest are introduction and conclusion.The introduction mainly includes the research object of this thesis,i.e.,Xu Jiarui and the general introduction of his academic activities;it summarizes the current situation,significance and methods of Xu Jiarui's researches.The emphasis of the introduction is to organize the views of“popular literature”in the first half of the 20^th century;especially Xu Jiarui's“Civilian literature”and pointed out the development and changes of its concept in different ages.Chapter one mainly discusses the detailed content of Xu Jiarui's“civilian literature”.Xu Jiarui treated“Civilian literature”as the key to academic research for exploration and construction.Specifically,“civilian literature”is composed of the following four parts:concern over the folk,class nature,attention to reality and practicability.Firstly,concern over the folk is the core of Xu Jiarui's“civilian literature”;it means one should respect folk literature and maintain the attitude of studying as well as accept the aesthetic values of folk literature and the creativity of folk artists sufficiently.Secondly,class nature is the characteristic of Xu Jiarui's“civilian literature”ever since the beginning of its formation;it mainly refers to Xu Jiarui's different evaluation and research according to differences of literature creation subjects and constitution of audiences'classes.Thirdly,attention to reality is the major viewpoints of Xu Jiarui's“civilian literature”to the content and emotions of literature.On one hand,he believed folk literature could express the content and emotions naturally if not being constrained by Confucian poem ideology too much.On the other hand,he advocated that the literature that intellectuals created for civilians should reflect social life truly by learning from the folk;in the meantime,Xu Jiarui had high evaluations for literature with authenticity.At last,practicability is the functionalism of Xu Jiarui's“civilian literature”.He advocated“civilian literature”under the turbulent background,valuing not only aesthetic values but also the influences of literature on the society.When discussing the specific content of Xu Jiarui's“civilian literature”,this thesis not only analyzes the ideological origin,but also Xu Jiarui's specific propositions and viewpoints.Chapter two mainly discusses the main content of Xu Jiarui's view of literary history based on“civilian literature”.After discussing the ideology basis of Xu Jiarui's view of literary history as well as viewpoints of“third-tier literature”,it focuses on discussing influences of“civilian literature”on the development of orthodox Chinese literature.In Xu Jiarui's view of literary history based on“civilian literature”,he believed that the development path of ancient Chinese literature was as follows:civilian literature is the power to push the forward of orthodox literature;its development is under the influences of foreign culture,especially Buddhism;when it gets developed sufficiently,it would promote the development of orthodox literature;civilian literature is the footstone and nutrient of orthodox literature.Chapter three mainly discusses Xu Jiarui's literature practices of based on“civilian literature”,including literature creation,literature translation as well as collection,organization and research of folk literature;he believed these practical activities could also reflect“civilian literature”ideology.The conclusion mainly summarizes Xu Jiarui's“civilian literature”as well as merits and demerits of his literature practices,the influences and historical status.
