Bi Yuan's Art Research

Bi Yuan(1730-1797),born in Zhenyang(present Taicang)in Jiangsu Province,won the champion in imperial examination under the reign of Emperor Qianlong in 25 th year of Qing Dynasty(1760).He used to be the minister of Military Affairs and the governor of Hunan and Hubei areas.He hosted a scholar shogunate,which is a representative of its peers in Qing Dynasty.This thesis takes Yuan's art activities in Qianjia period as a main line to study various artistic activities that he participated in and organized as an official and literary intellectual.Besides,the thesis also explores his spirit of “interaction between art and politics”,which reflects cultural ecology of the interaction between arts and politics under the reign of Emperor Jiaqing in Qing Dynasty.The author elaborates this point in the following four parts: The first chapter elaborates the formation of Yuan's artistic accomplishment.With the discussion of Yuan's artistic talent,family atmosphere,living environment,painting and calligraphy atmosphere,social communication activities,and political exchanges,the thesis explains Yuan's early artistic attitude and the literati's spiritual world.Yuan's support of Imperial Examination followed the mainstream in Qianlong period.Under the influence of the environment and social factors,his nature of art gradually interacted with his political ambition.The second part,interprets Biyuan shogun and its artist group.The artistic atmosphere of Biyuan shogun is formed together by the artistic aesthetic orientation of bi yuan individual,the artist group in the act and his relatives and friends.Therefore,this chapter sorts out the situation of bi yuan's shogun,summarizes the composition of artists in its act,combines the collection appearance of painting and calligraphy,and links with the general characteristics of art trends and social trends of the qianjia period,and concludes the origin of the scale of Biyuan's art events.Chapter three integrates Yuan's "artistic events".The thesis reviews his shogunate,friends and himself artistic events,including aesthetic activities of master pieces,and collections of poems and wines,paintings and paintings,inscriptions and gold stone textual research in Henan and Hubei shogunate periods.Meanwhile,the author listed many cultural restoration and protection activities led by Yuan's ideas,so as to further display the relation between art and politics.Chapter four explained the meaning of art events in a view of Yuan as literati,listed the pattern of the interactions between art and politics,and clarified the art effects and interactive influence it causes.In short,because of Yuan's political status,academic capability and his artistic background,he promotes the research,communication and inheritance in the field of art.This pushes forward the development of art and cultural ecology,and provides precious hits for future research on Jiaqing culture under multi-factor environment.
