Zeng State(a state in Hubei during the Zhou Dynasty)is a Vassal State almost without history records.The history of Zeng State was reconstructed on the abundant archaeological discoveries,which is rare in the historical research of the Vassal State in the Zhou Dynasty.This study sorts the history of the mysterious Zeng State,which based on the archaeological materials and the unearthed sources,and also combines the historical text.The Introduction discusses the context and significance of the research,literature review,sources and research methodology,in which the frame of the study was built.In the second chapter,abundant archaeological materials of the Zeng State are introduced,which lay the foundation of the sources of the research.In chapter three,based on the differences of the cultural meaning revealed by the archaeological material,the history of the Zeng State is divided into three periods,the Early West Zhou Dynasty,the period from the Late West Zhou Dynasty to the Early Spring and Autumn Period,the period from the Late Early Spring and Autumn Period(including the Middle Period)to the Middle Warring Period.The cultural relics and the cultural meaning behind them of each period are analyzed.The territory and political center of the Zeng State are also explored.Chapter four analyzes the cultural elements of two stages in the transformation fr om backing King Wen and King Wu of Zhou to supporting King of Chu,deepening th e understanding of the relationships between the Zeng State and Chu State,Zeng State and Zhou Dynasty.In the chapter five,two outstanding cultural characteristics ofZen g State are discussed:one is the formation of the musical system of the Zeng State as the orthodox music of Huaxia;the other is the southern road of casting and transportation of the bronze,known as the routes to copper and tin resources.The sixth chapter concludes the main points of this study,and aims at displaying a clearer and more comprehensive picture of the history of the Zeng State by importing thenew archaeological sources.
