This paper attempts to conduct a special book study from a perspective from phonology and vocabularyon of English-Chinese Vocabulary of the Vernacular or Spoken Language of Swatow,and establish a lexical corpus of Ch'ao-chou dialect in 19th century through a comprehensive arrangement and systematic investigation of the dictionary.This paper summarizes and explores the microcosmic phonetic and grammatical phenomena and rules of Ch'ao-chou dialect in 19th century reflected in the dictionary.The full text is divided into two parts:phonology and vocabulary.In the phonological part,the author collates more than 30,000 corpus of English-Chinese Vocabulary of the Vernacular or Spoken Language of Swatow,and matches to more than 4400 corresponding words.Compared with the materials of Ancient Chinese sound and the Modern Ch'ao-chou dialect,the author summarizes the initial consonant,vowels and tones system,comparison of the ancient Chinese tone and the colloquial and literary pronunciations.This paper analyzes the differences between 15 initial consonant system and 18 initial consonant system and the evolution of these two systems in the past 100 years,sums up the main evolution rules of vowels,probes into the methods of arranging the missionaries' literature,and expounds the "one tone(2a ??),three tone(3a\3b\3c??)" in Chao'chou dialect reflected in the dictionary.Finally,the author speculates on the phonological nature of the dictionary,and generally evaluates it from a linguistics perspective,which is the focus of this research.In the lexical part,the author makes a thorough researcth of the literature.Combined with the translation and the contemporary A Pronouncing and Defining Dictionary of the Swatow Dialect,Arranged According to Syllables and Tones written by Adele Marion Fielde,more than 10,000 corpus of Ch'ao-chou dialect are classified according to the meaning of words,and then compiled with annotation,which provide reliable literature for future research.
