Since the 1980 s,Chinese western films have achieved fruitful achievements.As the pioneer and pathfinder of western films,Wu Tianming particularly has made tremendous contributions to Chinese films.The study of Wu Tianming's directing art is based on Wu's film text and focuses on the time experience,local consciousness,ethnic culture,humanity insight,realism,poetic imagery and physical space,etc..Considering the conflicts and integration between Chinese traditional culture and modernized trend of thoughts,this dissertation attempts to reflect Wu Tianming's multiple identities and his increasingly mature artistic attainments and aesthetic ideals after witnessing the changes of Chinese western films.Wu is an artist radiating with humane complexes.For this reason,Wu's film creation is closely related to the symptoms of the times and reflects consistent aesthetic interest and distinctive styles in different historical periods.In addition,the dissertation tries to explore the theoretical values and cultural significance of Wu's film text based on studying the sense of mission and spiritual belief in his creation.Being one of the most important directors of Chinese western films,the third president of Western Film Group Corporation and the “godfather” of the fifth generation of directors,Wu Tianming has cultivated a batch of creation talents with high artistic attainments.As the talent scout of the fifth generation of directors,Wu has made outstanding contributions to developing and guiding Chinese films to the world.The study of Wu Tianming's film creation is thus not only the reflection over the development course and aesthetic style of western films,but also provides referential advice for summarizing the development experience of western films and exploring Chinese films.This dissertation intends to study Director Wu Tianming and his works from the perspective of aesthetic cultures to find out Wu's explorations and persistence as an artist,reflect Wu's contradictions and complexity amid the clashes between tradition and modernity and interpret the aesthetic narration and image layout reflected in his films.This is not only the aesthetic representation of Chinese western films,but also the artistic speculation of the western films themselves.This dissertation studies Director Wu from the perspective of time experience and aesthetic culture,which is a brand new insight and research aspect.The dissertation also makes a detailed interpretation and analysis of Wu Tianming's film text from the angle of time spiritual climate,local consciousness and aesthetic genes,and individual aesthetic ideals,and it also summarizes Wu's directing style.For one thing,the dissertation reflects over the psychological inclination and primitive impulse of Wu Tianming's creation based on Chinese traditional culture.For another,it studies the stigma of collective consciousness in Wu's creation combined with the characteristics of the times.In the meantime,the dissertation excavates Wu's explorations and insistency as an artist and presented his contradictions and complexity amid the clashes between traditions and modernity.The main body of this dissertation is divided into five parts.The first chapter analyzes Wu Tianming's creative transformation under the influence of the spiritual climate of the times,and shows the conflicts and fusion of multicultural thoughts in Wu's films.The alternation of the traditional and modern culture and the sharpening of contradictions are the focus of Wu Tianming's interests.The attachment to the traditional aesthetics of farming culture and the long for rapid development of urban civilization have become the core of his film creation.In the conflict and fusion,it appears as different value orientations between tradition and modernity,aesthetic transformation from single to multi-dimension of farming films,and self-examination and reshaping of personality.The second chapter analyzes the imprint of traditional culture and the construction of local consciousness in Wu Tianming's films,and it also compares the local experience in multi-context from the perspective of ethnic characteristics and heredity.This shows Wu Tianming's unique local aesthetics under his aesthetic ideal.At the same time,it also analyzes the primitive spirit of the ethnic group and interprets Wu Tianming's life philosophy and life fables.The third chapter begins with the images that Wu Tianming created in his films,and studies the “humanity” consciousness of the works in terms of characters and gender concepts.Wu Tianming's presentation and reflection on the issue of human nature is his works' eternal theme.In different historical contexts,his works show a diversified and comprehensive insight and rethink of“humanity”.His works present the theme of “humanity” in different social and historical backgrounds by objectively shaping the typical characters with distinct personality and real authentic vividness.The fourth chapter summarizes the director's realism and poetic aesthetics through the discussion of documentary and poetic aspects of Wu's films.While comparing the realism creation experience of western movies,this dissertation explores the aesthetic ideals and image patterns displayed in Wu's works.This is not only the aesthetic representation of Chinese western films,but also the artistic speculation of the western films themselves.The fifth chapter explored the impact of environmental factors on creative motivation and artistic and aesthetic tendency based on the investigation of Wu's growthbackground,combined with his film image text.Under the in-depth and meticulous reading and thinking of the physical space in Wu's film,the influence of geographical features and climatic conditions on social culture and psychological characteristics is explored.This influence is deeply rooted in Wu Tianming's creative impulse and aesthetic tendency,as well as in the image-building of his films.The sixth chapter comprehensively examines Wu Tianming's film art on the basis of the previous article.In summarizing and summarizing the overall style of his film,points out the inadequacies of his film.It is of profound historical significance and practical values to reinterpret Wu Tianming and his works and correctly asses his innovations in Chinese western films in the diversified era.The fourth generation of directors represented by Wu Tianming are calling for and insisting on the artistic ideals and universal values of an era.Nowadays,the film creation is confronted with the symbiosis and struggles between art and commerce.It not only experiences the chaos of diversified values and the ideological shocks,but is also stuck in cultural dilemmas and the confusion about breakthroughs.Wu Tianming presents his personal ideals and cultural insistency through image expressions.As a result,Wu's image world is radiating with the artistic appeal that transcends the era.Wu insists on pursuing his ideals and consciously constructed the mainstream spirit of the times amid changes in the contemporary era.For one thing,Wu reflects his deep love for the masses with sincerity and comprehended the confusions of the times with a sensitive heart.For another,Wu promotes the splendid development of China's western films and left behind the brightest colors in the history of Chinese films and even global films.
