China in the 10th-13 th centuries AD experienced a period of rapid development and frequent exchanges among the various ethnic groups in the areas of politics,economy,and culture.This ethnic exchanges in this period have always been the focus of scholars' attention and research.In addition to being recorded in historical documents,ancient ethnic exchanges are also reflected in the paintings of the time,forming the history of images.In recent years,many researches have emerged exploring the issue of ethnic communication in this period by using image data.However,instead of establishing the historical logic behind the images with documentation based on the details of the images,and eventually returning to the interpretation of the images themselves,the researches carried out were more often used for supporting viewpoints or leading to questions.This article is divided into three parts:The introduction combs research status and clarifies some relevant concepts,defines the scope of the research,organizes the research status and problems in the form of review,and explain the premises,feasibility and innovation of this paper.It is pointed out that this paper attempts to comprehensively use multi-disciplinary methodology such as imageology,ethnology and history to outline the history of national communication behind the works.The body part consists of three chapters.The subject of the research is the image data of the paintings closely related to ethnic exchange in Song,Liao,and Jin dynasties.Through the change of the symbolic meaning of the subject matter of "Wen Ji Gui Han",this paper points out Jin Zhangzong's intention of keeping peace with Song.It also analyses the tomb murals of Liao Dynasty,the symbolic meaning of "Five Horses",etc.,verifies some of the painting records of China in the 10th-13 th centuries and reflects the assumptions of the interaction between Song and the surrounding ethnic groups.It is further pointed out that the changes in the symbolic meaning,specific details,and old and new elements of Song,Liao,and Jin are not only affected by the cultural exchanges between the Song and the surrounding ethnic groups.Political exchanges and economic exchanges between ethnic groups also play a role in these changes.However,these changes reflect the phased characteristics and phased changes in the exchanges between Song and the surrounding ethnic groups.The information on ethnic exchanges in the paintings of Song,Liao,and Jin also demonstrates that the brilliant achievements of Chinese painting were jointly created by various ethnic groups.The diversified development and ethnic exchanges in this period were the early stage of the formation of the pluralistic integration of the Chinese nation.This article takes the paintings of Liao and Jin Dynasties in the Song Dynasty as the classics,and takes the history of ethnic exchanges in this period as the latitude,from the political,economic and cultural aspects,through the mutual interpretation of images and texts to deconstruct the characteristics of national communication embodied in Chinese paintings from the 10 th to 13 th centuries.This article takes the paintings of Song,Liao,and Jin dynasties as the meridian,and takes the history of ethnic exchanges in this period as the latitude,from the political,economic and cultural aspects,through the mutual interpretation of images and texts to deconstruct the characteristics of national communication embodied in Chinese paintings from the 10 th to 13th centuries.
