Comparative Study Of The Novels By Nam Cao And Lu Xun

Vietnam and China are neighbors that closely connect with each other,and both countries have a long history of culture,and their friendship last forever.The both countries have had close contacts in economy,culture and politics since ancient times,and Chinese culture has great impact on Vietnamese culture since the Qin Dynasty.Numerous Chinese literary and art works have been spread to the other Asian countries,including Vietnam,and have been highly valued by extensive Vietnamese readers.By the 20 th century,some famous writers and their works in the history of modern Chinese literature,such as Lu Xun,Ba Jin,Lao She,Mao Dun,Cao Yu,Zhu Ziqing,Zhao Shuli,etc have been entered Vietnam one after another,making the Vietnamese literary world increasingly active.And Lu Xun was introduced to Vietnam in this background and had a great influence on the Vietnamese literary world.Lu Xun was a great realist writer in the period of modern Chinese New Culture Movement while Nam Cao was a writer in the trend of realistic literature before and after Vietnam's August Revolution.Nam Cao and Lu Xun were in different countries and nationalities,which made them had different living backgrounds and personal experiences.However,they were both literary giants in the trend of realistic literature in their countries,and had many “something in common” in literary creation.A lot of realistic issues presented by Lu Xun in his works were also analyzed by Nam Cao.When portraying characters,for instance: both of them were concentrating on describing the new and old intellectuals who have had a rough life in the alternative era;the oppressed peasants who resigned themselves to adversity and the corrupt enslaved peasants;and females who were forgotten and ignored and exploited by the feudal morality and so on.Based on collecting and reading a large number of materials,this paper uses the method of comparative literature to study the most representative works of Nam Cao and Lu Xun's portrayal of characters,the narrative perspective of the novel,the novel plot construction,the art of language,and so on.The paper also explores and analyzes the deep reasons of their similarities and characteristics to get a better understanding of the two great writers and provide reference and inspiration for contemporary literary creation.Firstly,this paper makes a comparison of the similarities and differences between them.Both of them try to depict two kinds of characters: intellectuals and peasants.Intellectual images include old and new intellectual images and revolutionary intellectual images.And the peasants images include the domesticated peasants images,the corrupted peasants images and the peasants with rebellious spirit and etc,.In terms of narrative perspective,this paper compares the art of external narrative perspective,internal narrative perspective and changing narrative perspective between Nam Cao and Lu Xun.In terms of plot construction,this paper makes a contrastive study on the similarity and characteristics of the novels' plot structure of Nam Cao and Lu Xun: the narrative similarities of them two include assemble structure ?opening structure?psychology structure;the narrative characteristics include reverse,cross structure combined art,opposition and comparison structures combined art.Besides,Lu Xun and Nam Cao have something worth comparing in the language and the skills of narrative style of the novel.Such as the polyphonic language,polyphonic narrative language,character's dialogue and monologue,objective and indifferent narrative tone,satirical and humorous narrative tone.The main reasons for these similarities between the two writers are mainly in the historical background,cultural nutrients,creative principles and motivations,and the main reasons for the difference are the national conditions and cultural foundation,the difference of identity stratum and personal experience,and so on.
