On Exegesis Methods Of Warring States Bamboo-strip Manuscripts

Exegesis study is a fundamental work for the research of Warring States bamboostrip manuscripts.It's also a difficult but important work.The result of exegesis has direct influence on the further study of bamboo-strip manuscripts.Therefore,it's necessary to grasp a set of scientific and reliable exegesis methods.This paper combines the traditional exegesis methods and special features of Warring States bamboo-slip manuscripts,and try to figure out a set of exegesis methods which suit the study of Warring States bamboo-slip manuscripts.This paper is divided into five chapters:The first chapter focuses on traditional exegesis methods applying to the exegesis study of Warring States bamboo-slip manuscripts.There are eight parts: The first part is Referring to traditional explanations,using examples to explaining the importance of referring to right traditional annotations.The second part is identifying loan characters.This part is divided into three parts: first,interchangeable in ancient pronunciation;second,corresponding ancient documents reveal the choice of loan characters;third,words expamles in ancient documents.The third part is referring to the context.Using examples to interpret the importance of using context of Warring State bamboo-strip manuscripts to do exegesis study.The fourth part is referring to common practice,such as combining synonym,combining antonym and so on.The fifth part is analyzing grammar.In this part,this paper points out the importance of discriminating property of words,structure of sentence and function words.The sixth part is analyzing variants,such as variants of loan chatacters,variants of synonym and erroneous character forms.The seventh part is figuring out punctuation.In this part,this paper points out the importance of punctuation,and then elaborate on the methods of punctuation of bamboo-strip manuscripts.The eighth part discusses about six methods which are used less frequently than the former ones.The first one is using synonym to replace original words.The second one is using parallel construction.The third one is using the synchronous extend of words' meaning.The fourth one is referring to dialect materials.The fifth one is referring to ancient laws and regulations.The sixth one is using ancient exegesis scholars' research results.The second chapter mainly discusses about the usage of special features of Warring States bamboo-slip manuscripts in exegesis.This chapter is divided into eight parts.The first part discusses about the importance of interpreting characters,and its connection with bamboo-strip manuscripts exegesis.The second part elaborate on the importance of absorbing the recent research results of ancient phonology.The third part discusses about the inner evidence of loan identifying loan characters.The fourth part discusses about the patching up fragmentary slips and strip-linking.The fifth part is about the erroneous characters,residual characters,redundant characters,missing characters and transposed characters.The sixth part is about the relationship between special symbols and exegesis.The seventh part is about the habit of using characters in Warring States bamboo-strip manuscripts.The eighth part discusses about using special features of bamboo-strip manuscripts to do punctuation.The third chapter mainly discuss about several questions we should pay attention to when using traditional exegesis methods.They are as follows: questions about referring to ancient annotations;questions about loan characters;questions about combining words;misunderstanding the meaning of context;ignoring common practice of ancient documents;not knowing variants and function words;wrong punctuations.The fourth chapter discusses about the questions about special features of bamboostrip manuscripts,such as interpreting characters,patching up fragmentary slips and strip-linking,erroneous characters,habits of using characters and so on.In the fifth chapter,combining with the exegesis methods we discussed above,we do actual exegesis studies of bamboo-strip manuscripts collected in Shanghai Museum and Tsinghua University.
