The 1960s was a period of Left-wing resurgence in Malay(si)a.As Britain was disengaging from its empire,it promoted the idea of formation of Malaysia,Malaya,Singapore,Sarawak,North Borneo, and Brunei and threw up anti-colonial movements that began struggling towards self-determination and national independence. These movements manifested the ideologies of communism, socialism, nationalism, and communalism. As British imperialism began planning its retreat, the competition for power among the local movements became intense.Konfrontasi was a low-intensity campaign launched by Sukarno, the first President of Indonesia to oppose the formation of the Federation of Malaysia.Although much of the conflict was fought near the Malaysian-Indonesian border in Borneo,it had brought a great impact to the Left-wing in Malaysia and Sarawak. The negative effects of Konfrontasi vis-a-vis allegiance and communism were the cause of the downfall of the Left-wing in Malaysia and Sarawak.
