An Empirical Study On Senior High School Music Appreciation Textbook

Textbook quality includes both dynamic quality and static quality.Dynamic quality mainly refers to the textbook quality in use,whichguaranteesthe teaching quality.Static quality refers to the text quality of textbooks,which is the premise and foundation of dynamic quality.In this regard,the textbook quality is the crucial part of the curriculum quality and it also affects the teaching quality.Therefore,the researches on textbook quality is particularly important.The existing researchs on textbooks,especially those on mathematics textbooks,has made considerable progress in quantitative research.However,the quantitative research on music textbooks has just started andthus is very rare.This study mainly adopts the research methods of quantitative characterization and qualitative interpretation.First of all,the dynamic and static quality of the music appreciation lesson are quantifiedthrough questionnaire survey method in three aspects: the current teaching status of the music appreciation lesson and the approval of the text in the textbook “Music Appreciation” byteachers and students.Secondly,with the adoption of content analysis method and the help of structural idea,the concrete expression of the text quality of the textbook “Music Appreciation” is quantitatively portrayed across three dimensions of text content,text structure and text demonstration.At the same time,an attempt is made to generalize the basic paradigm of quality analysis of music textbooks.The research is divided into two phases:(1)The uestionnaire survey and the diagnosis of the problems,which include the preparation,issue,and statistical analysisof the questionnaires for the ultimate purpose of obtainingthe informations on the use of textbooks and the approval of teachers and students for the three editions of the “Music Appreciation” textbook;(2)The analysis of the text and the discovery of its pros and cons,which means to establish the research idea of the texts in music textbooks,build up the framework of text analysis and correct it after trial testing through literature review and the study of the textbooks;analyze the texts in the textbooks of the RY version,the HY version as well as the HC version through the already constructed tools;demonstrate the operability and the practicability of the tools,obtain relevant conclusions of current textbook texts and put forward opinions and suggestions at the same time.(A)Direct Conclusions Obtained from the Research1.The survey shows that the current teaching state of the music appreciation lesson in high school is not optimistic.At the same time,the textbooks of Music Appreciation is disapproved by teachers and students.It can be seen that the dynamic quality and static quality of the textbook “Music Appreciation” are not ideal.(1)The teaching status of the music appreciation courses in which all three editions of the textbooks is not optimistic,with the average scores mostly between 1.99 and 3.29.(2)The students' approval of the three editions of textbooks is not satisfying,with the average scoresmostly between 2.2 and 3.02;(3)The teachers' approval of the three editions of textbooks is also not positive,with the average scores mostly between 2.0 and 4.0.Both the teaching status and theapproval degree of the teachers as well as the students are at a lower level.2.Through the text analysis,it is found that: the selection,arrangement and presentation of the text content in the “Music Appreciation” of three editions are worthy of approval,but there are also some situations that are not conducive to students' musical literacy training.(1)The text content guarantees the basic capacity of music education,but the content quality is not properly considered: the knowledge categories are unevenly distributed,with low integration rate(?21%)and poor value orientation(?11%);the style of the music and the proportion of different countries are balanced,lacking national character,cosmopolitanity and the sense of the times;the exercises emphasize too much on the basic knowledge;(2)the structural arrangement of textual forms has some similarities and different characteristics;(3)the design of the texts are unreasonable in terms of capacity,quality and classifcation;high-level illustrations enjoys a low adoption rate(?1);there are fewer tracks and a single type of music score.(B)Other Related Conclusions Obtained from the Research1.Music textbooks have begun to focus on the integration and education of knowledge.From the perspective of the integration of knowledge content,music textbooks have gradually begun to pay attention to the integration of art,history,literature,geography,humanity,and society.From the perspective of value orientation of knowledge content,music textbooks have involved in the Infiltration of core values in society at the national and individual levels.It can be seen that the current music textbooks have begun to pay attention to the integration of knowledge and education,and focused on the cultivation of students' intentional knowledge.However,the penetration and validity of the textbook still need to be strengthened.2.Music appreciation textbooks are necessary and may also carry out the tasks of “literacy”.Through quantitative analysis,it is found that the knowledge content of music textbooks integrates the extended knowledge of literature,history,and art,and penetrates the values of prosperity,strength,democracy,and friendliness;the contents of music tracks concern different genres,themes,countries,and nations,broadening the students' horizon of music.At the same time,the music curriculum has multiple valuessuch as aesthetic value,creation and development value,social communication value,cultural inheritance value,etc,which has both possibility and innate advantages for the development and cultivation of students' core qualities.3.The compilation of music textbooks should focus on the promotion of student's literacy,so that students can obtain the skills of lifelong development.The data shows that teachers' approvaldegree of the music textbooks is higher than the students'.It can be seen that the design and layout of textbooks are more in line with the teachers' cognition.Textbooks seem to be for teachers,not students.Quantitative analysis of the texts shows that: from the perspective of knowledge content,the number of music knowledge is considerable.As for the exercise content,most of them are result evaluation.It can be seen that the idea of compiling textbooks has remained at a knowledge-based level,failing to meet the requirements of the 04 edition of the curriculum standard,which is far from the core quality requirements.The compilation of music textbooks is based on core qualities and it is imperative to focus on lifelong development.4.Following analytical tools are designed for studying the text quality of music textbooks:(1)Text analysis tools of“three elements and six points” for music textbooks;(2)Six analysis subframeworks for the analysis of text content and the presentation of quality;(3)Analysis of formal structure which should begin with an overall example and unit example.In summary,if the text of the current textbooks is measured by outcome education,its quality is worthy of approval,which is sufficient to cultivate basic knowledge and basic skills.If the text of the currenttextbooks is positioned by the standards of literacy education,its quality needs to be improved.It should be noted that this research does not advocate the use of pros and cons to define different types of knowledge,tracks,exercises,and presentations of music scores.The key to the text quality lies in whether it is reasonable or not,that is,content must be well balanced and appropriate.(C)Relevant Suggestions for the Text Design of the “Music Appreciation” Textbook:1.The content of the music textbook should be based on the guarantee of knowledge and skills,demonstrate the process,and implement the literacy,which means to:(1)equilibrate different types of knowledge contentwith particular emphasis on the selection and compilation of procedural content;(2)broaden the scope of the knowledge contentintegration and increase the integration rate;(3)strengthen the value orientation of knowledge content;(4)make the track selection and arrangement more comprehensive and reasonable,and emphasize more on the cultural infiltration of music;(5)set the exercises after the consideration of their practicality,innovation and research,and focus on the cultivation of musical abilities;(6)emphasize on the updating of content to ensure its strictness and accuracy.2.The presentation of texts in musical textbooks should assist the text content to ensure that the textbookscan set high moral values and cultivate people.(1)Music score should be demonstrated with reasonableness and diversity;(2)Illustrations need to be improved in terms of quality and science.3.The compilation of music textbooks should achieve the perfect combination of textual content and textual presentation,realizing an effect that 1 plus 1 is greater than 2.(D)Relevant enlightenments for thedesign of music textbook:The music curriculum should clarify the noumenon of music,broaden the non-ontological extensions on the basis of the music,and explore its curriculum value and educational valuedeeper and more professionally.It also shouldhave the function to cultivate students' core qualities,effectively promote the lifelong development of students,implement the basic task of setting high moral values and cultivating people.In addition,two textbook design cases are given: Beethoven's Symphony of Fate and the violin concerto “Butterfly Lovers” as examples,are designed to show how a textbook could promote the leaning process and aesthetics.
