Since texts form the basis of a Chinese textbook, how to select proper texts for the textbook is of great importance. Proper texts not only determine the quality of text and textbook, but also influence the quality and efficiency of teaching as well as the realization of teaching objects. To establish a standard of text selection has always been an important part of editing a Chinese textbook. This research on the standard of text selection is based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of four sets of Chinese textbooks widely adopted in China after the Cultural Revolution, published by the People's Education Press in 1978-1982,1988-1989,1992 and 2000. Based on the analysis of these textbooks this article attempts to explore a standard of text selection of Chinese textbook. The research begins with an analysis of Ye Shengtao's theory: its origin and development, its influence on text selection of Chinese textbooks, the relation between the textbook being a foundation and an example. Then comes a careful study on how the standard of text selection adopted by the People's Education Press has developed after the Cultural Revolution. It is proved that all these texts are selected according to Ye Shengtao's theory that texts should be the foundation of teaching and should provide typical examples to learners. Finally the article analyzes the quantitative and qualitative relations of texts in the four sets of textbooks. The quantitative relation refers to a comparison of the number of texts, the length of texts and the number of complete articles and the abridged ones in different versions. The qualitative relation refers to the proportion of different styles of articles adopted in the textbooks, which includes the proportion between Chinese classical style of writing and modern style of writing, Chinese and foreign works, practical writing and literature, classics and current writing.Quantitative and qualitative analysis are major methods used in this research. Tables and statistics aie also used. The major achievement of the research is to find out how to select texts for a Chinese textbook by quantitative and qualitative relations, based on a careful study and statistical analysis on the textbooks published by the People's Education Press after the Cultural Revolution. The research concludes that if we want to realize the teaching objects in junior high school's Chinese teaching Ye Shengtao's argument "texts are examples" and the standard of text selection should not be considered from a static point of view. It is also important to make clear the quantitative and qualitative relations of texts within a textbook.
