With high standard of teaching,research,sufficient human resources and fund,research universities in various countries are usually the backbone force in entrepreneurship education.In terms of university's fundamental mission of talent training,there are problems and challenges existing in the entrepreneurship education practice of some research universities.To make it worse,the inefficient theoretical research is inconsistent with the prosperous development of the entrepreneurship education.Regarding China,the initiation of entrepreneurship education is relatively late.How to construct a suitable entrepreneurship education model based on China's real situation is an emergent task facing Chinese research universities.The construction of theoretical model for entrepreneurship education demands the guidance of theories.Based on the review of current literature concerning the entrepreneurship education models for research universities,theories such as structuralist and pragmatic education theories,the triple-helix theory from the social and economic perspective,as well as the entrepreneurial ecological system theory are unable to reveal the core guiding principle of research university's entrepreneurship education,and are incapable to sustain the fulfillment of research university's educational mission.The aim of entrepreneurship education is to train people with creativity and entrepreneurial capabilities in order to promote social development and to serve the public.The fulfillment of the goal depends on the learner's initiative and creativity.Humanistic education theory proposes to design curriculum and teaching methodology according to the learner's needs.It views the teaching process as a facilitating system for the learner's growth both personally and academically,and finally for the learner's"self-actualization".The humanistic education philosophy not only conforms to the core orientation of talent training of the research universities,but it contributes to balancing the relationship among university research,talent cultivation,and economic outcomes.From a long-term perspective,humanistic education theory keeps the entrepreneurship education of research university centered around the nature of talent cultivation,and therefore it prevents the entrepreneurship education of research university from desperate pursuit of economic outcomes.The significance of this study is threefold:First,through case studies of four research universities in China and America,it explores the specific ways for the practical application of the student-centered humanistic model,and provides valuable reference for the entrepreneurship education practice of research universities.Second,this study makes an active attempt to broaden the theoretical foundation of entrepreneurship education research.The results of this study may offer theoretical reference for the entrepreneurship teaching and learning in universities and colleges,as well as for the strategic planning and administration of entrepreneurship education.Third,in terms of disciplinary development,the humanistic entrepreneurship education model for the research universities resulted in this study may further enrich the literature review of entrepreneurship education.This study mainly focuses on the entrepreneurship education model based on the humanistic perspective.It centers on the humanistic education philosophy,and applies qualitative research methods to explore differences and commonalities between Chinese and American universities.Through interviewing,literature reviewing,meeting attendance and visit on site,it singles out 4 cases in China and America and takes a detailed look at their entrepreneurship education practice.Conclusions drawn from this study mainly lie in the following three aspects:First,the humanistic education applies to the entrepreneurship education in research universities.In this entrepreneurship education model from the humanistic perspective,the entrepreneurship education's purpose,curriculum and teaching methodology,education resources and environment are all centered around the learner.Elements contained in these modules constitute a systematic and integrative model.Second,the model is helpful to integrate universities' role in economic development into their mission of scientific research and talent cultivation.Third,the entrepreneurship education model for the research universities under the humanistic perspective is a flexible and open system,which can meet the demand of the complicated and diverse entrepreneurship education.Based on the above-mentioned conclusion,this study suggests to make further exploration for the practical application of the humanistic education theory in the field of universities' entrepreneurship education.Universities in China may implement entrepreneurship education with Chinese characteristics by coordinating the government promotion and students demand.By following an approach with Chinese characteristics to the development of entrepreneurship education,Chinese universities may contribute to their own models for entrepreneurship education,and may contribute to the realization of the great rejuvenation of China.
