As an important part of the forestry industry, the wood processing industry shows obvious signs of industrial agglomeration. In the context of the supply-side structural reform in the forestry industry, improving the wood processing industry's quality and efficiency is the key to its high-quality development.Industrial agglomeration,as an effective organizational form of industrial development, can promote industrial innovation and development,as well as improve industrial labor productivity. This paper empirically examines the driving factors and the agglomeration effect of the wood processing industry. It analyzes the main factors driving wood processing industry agglomeration, and the endogenous interactive relationship of wood processing industrial agglomeration, innovation, and labor productivity. At the same time,it reveals the key agglomeration types that affect the improvement of the wood processing industry's labor productivity. It provides theoretical guidance for optimizing the layout of wood processing industry,as well as scientific and reasonable suggestions to encourage the wood processing industry to improve quality and efficiency. This paper reviews the theories and literature related to industrial agglomeration and the agglomeration of the wood processing industry. It adopts approaches such as theoretical analysis, empirical analysis, normative analysis, and comparative analysis;further,it uses specific methods such as descriptive statistical analysis, spatial correlation analysis, and the construction of classical and spatial econometric model to test empirically the factors driving agglomeration and the agglomeration effect of the wood processing industry at different levels by employing multiple perspectives. The following are the main conclusions of the research.First, the agglomeration level of China's wood processing industry shows an obvious trend of agglomeration. The agglomeration of the wood processing industry has a U-shaped trend;it declined at first, and, then, increased between 1998 and 2003.There is a large difference in the wood processing industry agglomeration level across provinces, and a clear trend toward regional transfer. The wood processing industry agglomeration in Northeastern and Eastern China is characterized by regional transfer from the “center” to the “periphery,” and the wood processing industry agglomeration,as a whole,is characterized by regional transfer from “east to west.” Second, the empirical test results of the factors driving inter-provincial wood processing industry agglomeration show that the manufacturer's relative output value, labor average wage level, export delivery value,as well as the forest resource endowment and transportation conditions have a significant influence on wood processing industry agglomeration. However, the influence of Hong Kong,Macao,Taiwan, and foreign investment is not significant.Wood processing industry agglomeration is spatially dependent, that is,the average level of industrial agglomeration around the region has a significant impact on the level of local industrial agglomeration.Third, the results of the simultaneous equation regression model capturing the wood processing industry's labor productivity, product innovation, and industrial agglomeration show that the wood processing industry cluster has a positive impact on product innovation and industry labor productivity;this,in turn, promotes industry agglomeration, which is manifested in the endogenous interactive relationship between innovation and industrial productivity in the wood processing industry cluster.Fourth, the wood processing industry and industrial cluster of industry labor productivity between the empirical results show that the wood processing industry's labor productivity is mainly driven by the three digits industry agglomeration;the three digits industry agglomeration spillover effects can provide more information and knowledge.Further, the spillover effect was able to achieve effective matching of labor and enterprise.Fifth,by constructing of static and dynamic panel models, the paper empirically examines the influences of the degree of professionalization, competitiveness, and diversification of other industries on the labor productivity of the wood processing industry, that is,the relative importance of the influences of MAR,Porter, and Jacobs externalities on the labor productivity of the wood processing industry. The results show that the degree of specialization and competition of wood processing industry is the key type of agglomeration externality. This is an “inverted U-shaped” relationship between the wood processing industry agglomeration and industrial labor productivity, that is,wood processing industry agglomeration first promotes, and, then, hampers industrial labor productivity.Sixth, the empirical test results of provincial employment density and labor productivity spatial spillover effects of the wood processing industry show that the wood processing industry of the region and the surrounding area employment density, average wages, and the sum of fixed assets and road and rail mileage per capita of wood processing industry labor productivity have a positive impact on the relationship. At the same time, the average labor productivity of the wood processing industry has a spatial spillover effect in the surrounding areas.Based on the above research conclusions, the paper puts forward the following policy enlightenment and suggestions: optimize the layout of wood processing industry and promote industrial agglomeration development;strengthen the supply-side reform of wood processing and optimize the adjustment of industrial internal structure;optimize the chain of wood processing industry and strengthen the coordinated development with other forestry industries;encourage the innovative development of wood processing industry and improve its competitive advantages;rely on the import wood processing trade demonstration zone, optimize the export structure of products;and create a high-quality operating environment for the wood processing industry cluster and promote the sustainable development of the industry.
