Abstract/Summary:
The topic of investigation is the effect of self-efficacy on performance in elite female marathon running athletes. The purpose of the study is to assess whether or not the addition of self-efficacy "Psych Beats" audio tracks will enhance marathon running performances. Ten female elite marathon runners participated in the study, which examined the average change in self reported self-efficacy, and consequent performances over the course of a winter marathon season. There was not a significant difference in average change in overall efficacy scores between those who received the Psych Beat intervention (experimental group) when compared to the control group; however, there was a significant difference in average change in "efficacy for sport" scores between participants who received the Psych Beat intervention (experimental group) when compared to the control group. Qualitative analysis indicated that Psych Beats, when used as a pre-performance psychological tool, yielded increases in self-efficacy, confidence, purpose, determination, mindfulness, resiliency, and motivation when running marathons. Future research should isolate sport-specific self-efficacy constructs while excluding other overlapping constructs. Additionally, future research should investigate the use of different versions/types of Psych Beats for specific competitions rather than a uniform/general self- efficacy Psych Beat.
