This is the first study to examine the effects of motivation, exposure, training style, reinforcement and personality on the ability to read micro expressions of emotion. These micro expressions are important to learn as they provide individuals with reliable information about a person's true feelings, and this can improve the quality of their interpersonal interaction. A 3 (training type) by 3 (reinforcement) fixed factor design with three control groups was conducted, in which 306 participants were trained and evaluated immediately after exposure, and 3 weeks later and then 6 weeks later. The results revealed that training improved the recognition of micro expressions, especially when a knowledgeable instructor -- who employed diverse training techniques such as description, practice and feedback -- led the training. Recommendations are offered for future training of micro expressions of emotion, which can be used in security, health, business, and intercultural contexts. |
