The purpose of this research was to examine the correlation between high school dropout rates and middle school reading levels. The population sampling included the Calhoun Middle School class of 2002, 182 students, and the Calhoun High School class of 2006, 146 students. The reading levels of the middle school students were analyzed from the Criterion Reference Competency Test administered to all students in the state of Georgia each year. A student who scored above 300 was considered to be on grade level in reading. This group of students was tracked through high school to analyze what effect reading levels had on dropping out prior to graduation. The population sampling was analyzed by race and gender. The findings revealed the White students were more likely to graduate than their Hispanic and Black counterparts. |
