Abstract/Summary:
The preparedness of high school graduates has been questioned by the business community. High school educators in Clear Creek Independent School District completed a survey to determine the frequency of use of 21st-century skills in instructional assignments presented to students during the fall 2008 semester. The components of instructional assignment score was calculated based on the inclusion of 21st-century skills. The 104 survey respondents answered questions about the use of 21st-century skills, the years of teaching experience, the highest degree earned, and the content taught. The only statistically significant finding was that educators who teach encore (elective) courses provide students with instructional assignments that include 21st-century skills as components more frequently when compared to core educators. Comparison of the results to other studies, assumptions based on the results, and interventions that can be developed to help educators with the inclusion of 21st-century skills are included.
